Travel to Montserrat
Montserrat is part of the Lesser Antilles and is found in the Leeward Islands, which is located in the Caribbean. Called the “Emerald Isle,” there is a distinct resemblance to Ireland that can be found in the island’s shape and the culture that has developed over the centuries here.
Since 1995, the primary volcano on the island has been active, which has creating an exclusion zone along the southern coast of the island. If you head to the top of Garibaldi Hill, you’ll be able to see the destruction the lava flows have caused while potentially getting to see the volcano erupt.
While visiting the island, you’ll find that the star attraction is the abandoned town of Plymouth. It is the only volcanic-buried town in North or South America. There is a strange quiet to experience here, with even the birds and animals staying away. Residents were forced to flee immediately, which means the remnants of their lives, from typewriters to toys, are still present in this ghost town.
For an engaging hike, try taking a trail along the Centre Hills Forest. Several endangered species can be found during this adventure, from birds to reptiles to plants. Eight of the nine hiking trails that can be found on Montserrat are located here.
Be sure to experience New Beach during your stay as well. It is difficult to access, but this black-sand beach offers beautiful rock formations and birdwatching opportunities.
Montserrat offers sailboat cruises, helicopter excursions, and many opportunities to experience nature. From the volcano to the sea, this is one holiday adventure that should not be missed.
