Travel to French Guiana
French Guiana, or simply Guyane, is an overseas department of France that is located along the northern Atlantic coast of South America. It has an extremely low population density, with over 50% of the country living in its capital city of Cayenne. Since 1981, it is the only territory on the mainlands of the Americas that is still part of Europe.
That makes traveling to French Guiana a fairly simple proposition. Anyone within the EU and European Economic Area can visit, stay, or even work without a visa for an unlimited period. For many, a national identity card is all that is required.
One of the most unique sights that can be found in French Guiana is the Hmong Market. It is located in Cacao, a village that is only 4 blocks in total size. Held every Sunday, you’ll find extraordinary weaving and embroidery available. Cacao can also be used to stage jungle tours.
If you visit Cayenne, be sure to take some time to linger in this 17th century community. Creole, Brazilian, and French influences have come together to create a distinctive personality. Take a stroll through the botanical gardens, visit Fort Ceperou, and enjoy the retail therapy offered along the Avenue of General de Gaulle.
You’ll find beaches, coastal opportunities, charters, and much more is available in French Guiana as well. Coming here can be the perfect holiday, but it can be much more than that as well. Find your way here and you may just be tempted to call it home.
