Travel to Brunei

Located on the island of Borneo, the small nation of Brunei officially calls itself the “Abode of Peace.” Surrounded by Malaysian and the South China Sea, this small nation gained its independence in 1984. It has become an industrial center and is consistently ranked as one of the wealthiest in the world today.

One of the things you must see during a stay in Brunei is the Istana Nurul Iman. It is the world’s largest residential palace in occupation, with nearly 1,800 rooms. Covering 300 acres, the palace provides a stunning view of Kampong Ayer. It is only open to the public three days per year, however, so you may need to plan accordingly.

Be sure to visit Kampong Ayer as well. This water village provides a traditional cultural experience to the visitor, with numerous buildings placed on stilts over the water. The stilts are so light, however, with traditional building practices that the homes could be moved if flooding or storms threatened them. Take a water taxi and then relax as you enjoy the ride.

An adventure that is available all year long is a stop at the Eco Ponies Garden in Tutong. You will find the garden to be quite peaceful, filled with the melodies of song birds in the morning. There is a small market on the grounds and several activities to enjoy. You can purchase herbs, medicinal plans, and perfumes that are made from the flowers grown there.

With diving, snorkeling, and beach opportunities available as well, a trip to Brunei is reasonably priced and quite easy to plan. What will you be able to discover?

Best of Brunei

The tiny Southeast Asian country of Brunei is among the wealthiest in the world, and offers tourists a rich holiday experience in a glorious tropical setting. Brunei is the only entire country on the large island of Borneo and, lying on the north coast, is a mere dot compared to the expansive landmasses of Indonesia and Malaysia that make up the remainder of the island. Brunei holidays provide an opportunity to explore a modern Asian country rich in history and culture that’s surrounded by pristine rainforest. The country is as famous for its ruler, the Sultan of Brunei, one of the richest people in the world, as anything else.

Bandar Seri Begawan is the capital of Brunei and the country’s airport, Brunei International, is just under 10km away. Accommodation in the city is mostly in the mid-range and higher level, and you’re sure to find something to your liking, as well as your pocket. Brunei holidays can also be spent outside of the capital. The westernmost Belait region of the country is one option for tourists, with a number of good hotels and apartments. There’s also tourist accommodation in the more easterly Tutong district and capital of the same name. Get in touch with nature by staying in the rainforest.

Brunei covers an area of only 5,765 square kilometres and has a population of just over 415,000, yet the country is rich in natural gas and oil and as a result is spectacularly wealthy. There’s excellent infrastructure in the capital and beyond as well as great facilities and services for tourists.

If you’re starting your holiday in Brunei near the capital, Bandar Seri Begawan, you might like to begin your journey of exploration at the Royal Regalia Museum. An homage to the Sultan of Brunei and his family, and you’ll see lots of photographs of them. Also on display is a wide variety of gifts presented to the royal family over the years, as well as a stunning coronation carriage.

Continue your discovery of this fascinating country at the Brunei Museum, where you’ll find out all about the country’s history and culture.

Brunei is on the coast, and so it has some great beaches. Lapped by the waters of the South China Sea are Muara Beach, just under 30km from the capital; Seri Kenangan Beach at Kuala Tutong; and Lumut Beach in Belait, among others. Scuba diving is becoming a popular activity in the waters off the coast, where divers can see coral reefs, sharks, rays and a constellation of shimmering tropical fish.

Back on land, and adventures in the rainforests are a tourism favourite. Borneo’s ancient rainforests are vital to providing climatic stability not only in the region but around the world, and unfortunately in other parts of Borneo they’re disappearing at an alarming rate. Many tourists want to experience these ‘lungs of the world’ and their enormous diversity of flora and fauna. Book an eco-tour and see this natural majesty for yourself.

Don’t forget to try the succulent Bruneian cuisine. In common with its neighbours, Malaysia and Indonesia, dishes are deliciously spicy – often fiery – and luxuriating in mouth-watering coconut.
