Travel to Cambodia

The Kingdom of Cambodia is a land of intrigue and mystery. Located on the Indochina Peninsula, it is a land where tribal life mixes with modern urban life to create a culture experience that is completely unique.

It is also a country that faces numerous challenges, including environmental deforestation. Now is the time to see the wildlife sanctuaries and national parks in Cambodia before they become completely developed.

Despite those challenges, Cambodia has pockets of paradise that are breathtakingly beautiful. In the southwest, Sihanoukville offers incredible beaches that will help you relax the day away. If you want to go backpacking, then Battambang in the northwest offers a quiet opportunity to experience local life.

You’ll also find a number of stunning temples available to explore. Some are even still being used as monasteries or places of education to this day.

A visit to Cambodia often means shopping through the markets to find a local souvenir to bring home. From wood carving to ceramics to the Krama, the traditional Cambodian scarf, there are plenty of ways to commemorate your trip to this wonderful destination.

Since 1993, Cambodia has been working to upgrade the experience that visitors receive. Most of the main roads throughout the country are now paved, with many meeting international standards. Public transportation is available with regularity and guided tours are available to take you out to explore the remote treasures that are out there.

Cambodia is mysterious. Cambodia is beautiful. If you’re ready for the challenge, then it could provide you with one of life’s greatest adventures.

Best of Cambodia

Cambodia – the land where ancient Angkor temples soar up to the clouds, where the vibrant orange robes of monks can be spotted from miles away and where the perils of the past do not taint the smiles on locals’ faces. This awe-inspiring country shines like no other. Cambodia has big temples and a big heart to match.

Tucked between Thailand, Laos and Vietnam, Cambodia is one of the glistening gems of southeast Asia. Famed for its magnificent ancient temples and Khmer hospitality, Cambodia holidays should be on the must-visit list for all travellers to southeast Asia. Home to 15 million people, the majority of Khmer origin, Cambodia is a country which is succeeding in preserving its past while continuously moving forward. Cambodia’s turbulent past is no reasons to steer clear of visiting. If anything, the heart wrenching history of this humble country is all the more reason to pay it a visit. They say the best way to learn about the world is to travel and experience it for yourself and nowhere does this apply so well than to Cambodia, a country with so much to share.

Cambodia’s capital, Phnom Penh, is the entry point for many arriving in Cambodia. Located in the south-central region of the country, Phnom Penh does not boast many typical tourist sites. Rather, this growing city is an excellent place to observe the future of Cambodia taking shape. If you’re visiting Cambodia, then Siem Reap is most probably going to be on your itinerary. The entry point to the world renowned Angkor Wat temple, Siem Reap is where you’ll find hoards of visitors from around the world, flocking to explore temples and learn more about the ancient Khmer Empire. Other than Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, notable places to stay include Banlung, Kompong Thom, Kratie and Tonle Sap Lake.

Whatever your motivation behind your Cambodia holiday, be prepared to come away with a new appreciation for this county and its people. For a long time Cambodia has struggled with many demons. A violent history, genocide, coups and poverty have all plagued this small country. The 21st century brought with it a new dawn on Cambodia and the country is experiencing a steady recovery. Tourism is Cambodia’s second largest source of income, behind its thriving textile industry, signalling that Cambodia is well and truly open for business.

Being just a hop, skip and a jump away from Australia, it is no wonder that so many Aussies flock to Cambodia each year. In a country where everything from food to accommodation is a fraction of what you would expect to pay elsewhere, it’s not hard to see why many who come to Cambodia come back for more soon after.

The ancient temples of Angkor Wat are perhaps one of Cambodia’s most defining archaeological sites. The largest religious monument in the world, the temples of Angkor were originally a Hindu complex before becoming a Buddhist monument. Built in the 12th century, Angkor Wat is a must-visit when in Cambodia.

When planning your Cambodia holiday, do take into account seasonal changes in the weather. Cambodia has two distinct seasons; rainy and dry. The rainy season lasts from May through to October and the dry season typically from November to April. Temperatures in the dry season can rise to 40C, whereas the rainy season is often substantially cooler, dropping to around 22C with high humidity. You will either be facing high humidity or high temperatures while in Cambodia, maybe even both if you’re really unlucky, so come prepared with loose clothing and lots of sun protection!
