Founded in 1729, Baltimore is the largest independent city in the United States. It’s also one of the largest seaports in its region and is an industrial and manufacturing center. With 100+ identified districts in the city, it is often called the “City of Neighborhoods.”

What makes Baltimore unique is its focus on history. Also known as Monument City, Baltimore is a living legacy of America’s heritage and historic foundations. There are more monuments and historic landmarks in the city per capita than any other city in the US. Sites to visit include the Washington Monument, the National Aquarium, the Emerson Bromo-Seltzer Tower, and Pennsylvania Station.

Additional opportunities lie around the Inner Harbor, where much of the city’s tourism infrastructure has been built. The USS Constellation can be found in the harbor, which is the last vessel from the US Civil War era that is still afloat. Several additional historic US ships are also anchored in the area.

Several museums are worth a tour when visiting Baltimore as well. The Baltimore Museum of Industry will take you through the history of the city and how its industries helped to create the modern city. At the Walters Art Museum, you’ll find a collection donated to the city by the Walters family that features numerous items from the late 19^th and early 20^th century. Then there’s the B&O Railroad Museum that is one of the best collections of early railroad artifacts in the world.

Baltimore’s position on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay is ideal for sightseeing and dining alike. Spend an afternoon on top of the Top of the World Observation Level & Museum, the 27th floor of the World Trade Center on the bay’s shores, and view the city’s skyline, seascape and familiar sights.

Baltimore is also full of dedicated sports fans, committed to their city’s athletic history and legacy. The Babe Ruth Birthplace and Museum celebrates sports legends throughout history in its museum, Sports Legends at Camden Yards. Nearby you can see the Orioles or the Ravens play in stadiums full of diehard fans.

Battle Monument

During the Battle of Baltimore in 1812, the British naval fleet found itself in a stalemate with Baltimore’s Fort McHenry. Without reinforcements available and facing a formidable enemy, the British retreated, inspiring Francis Scott Key to write “The Star Spangled Banner.” The Battle Monument was erected in the city’s center to commemorate this significant victory for the United States and you can visit the grounds of historic Fort McHenry today.

U.S.S. Constellation

Baltimore is the restingplace of the U.S.S. Constellation, the last all-sail battleship built by the US Navy and a very popular attraction. It is also the last vessel from the Civil War era that is still afloat. Baltimore was the second heaviest traveled port-of-entry for immigrants into the United States during the nation’s infancy, adding to the incredible diversity in cuisine and culture. Website

The National Aquarium
