Travel to Bay of Islands

Read about and get inspiration for a trip to the city, check for the cheapest flights and hotels in Bay of Islands

The Bay of Islands on the northern coast of New Zealand’s North Island is well named: altogether, there are 144 tiny islands in the bay. This popular tourist destination is in the Northland region of North Island and enjoys a sub-tropical oceanic climate that gives it hot summers of up to 26°C and cool winters where temperatures fall to around 14 degrees. Many people come to the Bay of Islands for its charming natural surroundings but also to use it as a base to explore further into what New Zealanders call the ‘Far North’. Whatever your plans are, you’re sure to have a wonderful time.

One of the most popular places to stay in the Bay of Islands region is the town of Russell. You can stay on the waterfront or on the hill, and there’s plenty of Bay Island accommodation, from lodges to house rentals and luxurious hotels. Paihia is a nice seaside town that has good beaches and it’s a good starting point for your Bay of Islands holidays. Waitangi is a short stroll from Paihia and is an interesting place to stay, with lots of historical aspects to explore. Opua is another great place to stay during your visit to the Bay of Islands.

Best of Bay of Islands

What to see and do in Bay of Islands ?

The Bay of Island is one of the most popular holiday locations in New Zealand, and for good reason. It’s a tranquil place surrounded by stunning scenery and lovely small towns: Paihia, Russell, Waitangi, Kerikeri and Kawakawa, each with their own distinct characteristics and flavours but collectively bound by the culture and traditions of the region.

Big-game fishing is one thing the Bay of Islands is well known for. If you want to see if you can reel in a giant marlin or other large fish, you can charter a boat and head out yourself. If you don’t have the experience to pilot your own craft, skippers are available to take you there.

Even if fishing is not your thing, it’s still well worth the trip. Out in the marine park there’s all sorts of creatures to see, including whales, dolphins, penguins and gannets. It’s a spectacular ocean environment peppered with lots of tiny islands.

You can view local art exhibitions and coalmining and other memorabilia at the Kawakawa Memorial Library Centre on Wynyard Street in Kawakawa. You’ll find the Bay of Islands Vintage Railway there.

Kawakawa is also known for its toilets – the ones designed by Austrian architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser anyway. These outlandish public loos on the main street are regarded as a work of art and are in fact a tourist attraction. Hundertwasser lived in the town until his death in 2000, no doubt flushed with success as today more people stop by to snap the snazzy loos than to use them.

The Kawiti Caves at nearby Waiomio are worth a visit. These limestone caves are home to glowworms that light up the interior ceilings and give an ethereal feel to the place. There are a number of wineries in the Bay of Islands area, and you visit them and sample some of their offerings, as well as having something to eat.

There are some good restaurants in the towns of the Bay of Islands. The Duke of Marlborough Hotel in Russell has the distinction of being awarded the first liquor license in New Zealand. Spend your evenings sampling some of their finest seafood, washed down with the best of local wines.
