Bellinzona brings the history of Ticino and Switzerland to you with a marvelous spectacle. The city is famous because of its three castles, named Castlegrande, Sasso Corbaro, and Montebello. Since 2000, these three castles have been listed as a world heritage site. Fortifications in Bellinzona have existed since the 1st century BC. Castlegrande has one of the most impressive views with its location, but accessing the site can be difficult. Take the elevator at the foot of the rock to the castle to avoid climbing the narrow city streets through the walls to reach the grounds. The archeology section of Montebello is quite fascinating, with items from the 15th century BC as part of the exhibit. The structure of the castle was renovated in the early 20th century. Hours are limited to March-November visits, however, so plan accordingly.
Sasso Corbaro features the Wooden Room. Build for the Emma family in the 18th century, the walls are paneled in walnut. The castle houses temporary exhibits throughout the year and it too is only open seasonally. Since the 19th century, Bellinzona has celebrated Rabadan. It is a carnival festival that is especially lively, bringing in visitors from all around the world. Colorful costumes and numerous events throughout the city make it a wonderful experience.
