What to see and do in Berkeley ?

The city stretches from the Berkeley Hills, which offer commanding views of the city and the Bay, down to the beach. The area by UC Berkeley is one of the most upscale in the city, with modern apartment buildings sharing space with historic and beautiful homes, many of them fine specimens of Victorian architecture. No matter where you stay during your Berkeley vacation, you’ll be able to experience the area’s renowned atmosphere of progressive thinking, civic activism, and free speech.

If you’re a fan of college sports, you’re in luck. Berkeley boasts one of the UC system’s finest sports programs, and Cal games are a Bay area tradition. Students, residents, and alums all stream to games in throngs, and you’ll be hard-pressed to find a more devoted bunch. Football is the most popular sport on campus, and the Bears regularly compete for some of the top Bowl games in the nation. On game day, the entire district is alive, with thousands of people taking to the streets with chants and songs.

The Telegraph area is the epicenter of Berkeley’s hippie culture, which is probably the city’s most well-known feature. Walk down the street and you’ll pass street vendors selling goods of all kinds, from trinkets to finely crafted pottery and jewelry made by local artisans. Incredible restaurants abound, many of them very reasonably priced thanks to the high number of college students in the area. No visit to Berkeley is complete without a tour of the UC Berkeley campus. The school is the first of the great UCs, and its campus is one of the finest in the nation. Incredible architecture evokes classical images of learning, with columns and facades that often evoke Greek temples and important federal buildings. Wide squares bustle with activity during school hours, and green areas offer respite from the noise of city and campus. Strawberry Creek flows through campus, offering peace that only flowing water can give.

The Berkeley Marina is beautiful at any time of day, but especially at sunset, when the sun’s reflection off of clouds and water casts vibrant hues of gold, red, and pink onto the darkening sky. Numerous sailing ships sit in the marina, and rental companies allow visitors to experience the Bay from the water, either by boat or kayak. It’s just another amazing experience awaiting on Berkeley vacations.
