Travel to Borneo
If you like your holidays to be a little unpredictable, and to offer something different around every corner, Borneo could be the perfect destination for you. This incredible island has something for everyone, from isolated, sun-kissed beaches and bustling, exciting cities to luxurious, tranquil hotels and spectacular, inspiring countryside.
Borneo is a large island with something of a split personality, partly due to the fact that three separate countries – Brunei, Malaysia and Indonesia – each have a piece of it. Wherever you happen to be, however, you will find friendly locals who are keen to show off the charms of their homeland.
As you might expect from such a large island, there are a huge number of locations which are worthy of a visit. Sabah, in the north-east, is a popular destination with tourists from Australia and all over the world, partly because it offers a wide range of activities. Needless to say, there are plenty of beautiful beaches here as well, if all you’re looking for is a little rest and recuperation.
A little quieter but just as impressive is the city of Miri in the Sarawak region. If you’re keen to see the local wildlife, be sure to visit the national parks which are located nearby

What to see and do in Borneo ?
It’s important to remember that Borneo is huge, the third largest island in the world, and as such any exploration you make will need to cover great distances. If you just want to check out the local region, hiring a car is a good idea. With secluded coves, mangrove swamps, mountains, forests and large population areas to discover, you may find you run out of time.
While many parts of Borneo are exceptionally modern, it’s reassuring to know there is plenty of history just waiting to be discovered here. The highly impressive Fort Margherita in Kuching, one of the most recognisable landmarks on the island, is well worth a visit. The architecture is reminiscent of an English castle, and the building itself, which was once used as protection against pirates, is now an important tourist attraction.
If you’re one of those people who like to explore the local countryside when you travel, you’ll be delighted to know that holidays to Borneo can offer something special. Pay a visit to Gunung Mulu National Park during your stay and check out the rainforest, caves and steep inclines. You’ll be mightily impressed by the spectacular, unspoilt vistas featured in and around this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Borneo has a long, varied coastline, and the beautiful clear waters make it the perfect destination for those who like to enjoy some snorkelling and scuba-diving. There are several popular sites around Miri, including the Atago Maru wreck and the Miri Reef. Even if you’re s first-timer, you can still enjoy a dive thanks to the presence of a sizable number of schools ready and waiting to give you a little instruction.
There are plenty of markets which enable you to shop till you drop in Borneo, but if you prefer something a little more contemporary make sure you visit the 1Borneo Hyper Mall. Here you will find a great choice of high end designer outlets, department stores and supermarkets. And when you feel the need to stop and relax awhile, you’ll have several eateries to choose from.
Most of us love nothing more than a day at the beach, but if you want a little excitement thrown in make sure you go to Kota Kinabalu. With a huge selection of water sports on offer, ranging from banana boats and jet-skis to parasailing and wakeboarding, you’re guaranteed to have a good time.
