Travel to Borneo Kalimantan
In the centre of Indonesia’s impressive spread of islands lies Borneo, the largest island in all of Asia. The island of Borneo is comprised of three separate countries – Malaysia, Brunei and Indonesia, with Indonesia’s portion being called ‘Kalimantan’.
Home to 12 million inhabitants, Kalimantan has one of the oldest living rainforests in the world. The Borneo rainforest is over 130 million years old. It has a rich and diverse list of flora and fauna, as well as some incredible wildlife which you’re sure to come across during your time there. In keeping with Indonesia’s cultural diversity, there are 74 languages which are currently spoken in the four provinces of Kalimantan, so don’t worry about picking up a phrase book before you arrive on your Borneo Kalimantan holiday!
Banjarmasin, on the southern coast of Kalimantan, is the biggest city in the province and home to the renowned floating market. For those looking to get lost in the wilderness, Loksado might be an enticing accommodation location, being the trekking capital of Indonesian Borneo.
One of the exciting things about Kalimantan is that it is largely untainted by tourists. West and Central Kalimantan are so off most travellers’ radars that stepping foot there will have you face to face with a culture and lifestyle so pure and unique.
