Holidays to Cambridge offer a fantastic range of outdoor sights, as well as things to do. Lake Karapiro is perfect for a family picnic, or a quiet afternoon by the water. The Maungakawa Scenic Reserve offers one of the best views of Cambridge and its surrounding area. The Pirongia Forest park also comprises some challenging walks and is well known for its towering landmarks, the volcanic cones of Mount Pirongia.

The area offers many stunning public and private gardens which are open to visitors, which showcase the stunning beauty of New Zealand’s flora and fauna. Mount Cook also offers fantastic walking, cycling and water activities throughout the area, which are great for days of family fun, or just relaxing by the water’s edge as a pair. International, national and regional rowing regattas and hydroplane races regularly take place in the town, and it is also host to the Autumn Festival as well as two weeks of Christmas festival activities.

Of course, Cambridge is also famous for its natural beauty, captured and immortalised in the Hollywood block-buster, The Lord of the Rings. The filming location of the series and Sir Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit is just a short 20 minute drive from the town centre. There you can enjoy a two-hour guided tour, learning the story of how the Alexander family farm was turned into Tolkien’s Shire. The Shire of Tolkien’s Middle-earth comes to life as your guide shows you around the property. You’ll see hobbit holes, The Green Dragon Inn and Mill as seen on the big screen. Because it remains a working farm, children can also pet animals during their visit.
