Walking through Chiang Rai city centre you can explore its ornate temples, taste the heat of the chilli-infused produce at the markets and continue to take a short stroll to view the Golden Triangle Mountains. Driving just over an hour out of the city will take you into the lush jungle and sparkling waterways in Chiang Saen. Here, you can explore the hill tribe communities, trek through the wilderness and sample freshly brewed coffee from the local plantation. From the Golden Triangle area you can even travel by elephant, bicycle, river raft or long-tail boat to nearby Myanmar and Laos.
The terrain surrounding Chiang Rai is relatively flat. Further west and northwest limestone hills emerge with exposed cliffs. This is where most of the hill tribes reside, making up approximately 12.5% of Chiang Rai’s population.Chiang Rai has three seasons, cool, hot and monsoon. The best time to visit is during the hot season from March to May.
Don’t miss out on the Phu Chi Fa Forest Park. Here you can experience a mountain top sunrise, travel through villages, shop at local markets, visit the hot mineral waterfalls and enjoy a riverside picnic. Pu Chi Fa offers breathtaking views of northern Laos, northern Thailand and the Mekong River.
