The restaurants in the city have a total of 15 Michelin stars. There are parks, bike paths, and walking trails throughout the city to help you enjoy this capital’s charm. A major effort to clean up the waterfront has even resulted in several shoreside swimming pools for you to enjoy! If you’re planning a trip to Copenhagen, seeing the waterfront is an essential part of the visit.
Denmark’s capital is filled with anicent, colorful buildings that give this city an intense charm that simply cannot be replicated by any other city in the world today! Going beyond the waterfront, however, we’ve put together some essential sights to consider adding to your itinierary for your next visit so that you can truly experience the essential Copenhagen for yourself.
Your First Stop? It Must Be Tivoli!
Tivoli Gardens is the second oldest amusement park in the world, founded in 1843, and is still one of the most visited amusement parks in all of Europe despite its age. You’ll find 27 rides at Tivoli for your enjoyment, including 4 roller coasters. There’s beautiful gardens to explore – make sure you bring your camera! You’ll also get to experience a traditional pantomine theater, plenty of unique restaurants and cafes that will make your taste buds have a delightful ride as well, and of course your typical fair food that you probably shouldn’t eat… but still will because it tastes so good!
To begin enjoying the culinary scene in Copenhagen, we recommend a trip to Noma after you’ve had a great time at Tivoli. Featuring homegrown harvests, the two specialty ingredients you’ll want to pursue here are the shrimp and the beets. It’s location is fitting for the rustic menu – it’s in a harborfront warehouse that dates back to the 18th century. Dill-infusion on the scallops? Beautiful!
Take a Full Day To Explore Copenhagen By Boat
There’s something unique about being able to explore a city by boat. A harbor tour in Copenhagen is an excellent way to get a new perspective on the antiquity and charm that this city has to offer every day! You’ll get a view of many of this city’s key landmarks and buildings, including the Opera House that just happens to be on its own island! You can pack yourself into a massive tour boat with dozens of other visitors, but our recommendation is to hop on board a classic schooner and experience Copenhagen as the sailors of the past did.
After the harbor tour, it will be time to get your street legs back. There’s no better way to do that than by shopping, right? Vesterbro, Nrrebro, and Islands Brygge all offer incredible shopping opportunities thanks to small, hidden boutiques that offer a wonderful selection of items for the hipster or the traditionalist alike. Hidden gems abound in all three of these neighborhoods, so if you really enjoy shopping and exploring, you could make an entire Copenhagen trip just by wandering through these neighborhoods!
For a more traditional shopping experience to get the Danish items you might want to bring home, you’ll need to make your way to Strget, Copenhagen’s center of classic finds. Get one of the iconic egg chairs like you might have seen in Men in Black for a contemporary design in your home or maybe some handpainted dishware with the classic flowers of Denmark. Don’t want to pack home the real items? That’s ok! You can pick up miniature items of these items as well!
Get a Taste of Authentic Copenhagen!
If there’s something you’ve just got to have while in Copenhagen, it’s a pastry. Danish pastries just seem to melt in your mouth and bring you a bliss that is simply incomparable to any other experience in life! Make your way to Conditori La Glace if you get the chance and join the regular for a lingering experience. Opened in 1870, there may be no better place in the world today to have a mug of hot chocolate! Make sure to order their sports-cake while you’re there too. It’s a heavenly combination of whipped cream, crushed nougat, macaroons, and carmelized choux.
If you need to walk off the extra calories for awhile, we recommend a trip to the National Museum to explore a comprehensive look at Denmark’s past. You’ll be able to see runes that date back to Biblical times, artifcats from the Viking era, and plenty of charming interiors that focus on the 18th century opulance that helped this city grow explosively. The museum is closed on Mondays, but there is no entry fee to worry about.
And for the end of your walking on this day, if you don’t mind investing a five-spot per person, the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek offers visitors the chance to explore some of the most iconic sculptures in history from both the Impressionist and Non-Impressionist eras. We don’t want to spoil the trip for you, but if you think along the lines of Rodin’s The Thinker, you’ll get an idea of what you’ll find here. The central atrium, which is filled with palms, is a great place to take a break and pick up a snack if you need one with all the walking!
A Day Trip To the Louisiana Museum? Why Not!
For Americans visiting Copenhagen, there may be a bit of confusion at the idea of visiting the Louisiana Museum. It’s not a museum dedicated to the American State, but is instead named after the founder’s wife. The entry fee is a ten-spot and in return you’ll get to explore glass atriums that are filled with modern art. You’ll be surrounded by magnificent sculptures that add make this 22 mile trip an experience well worth making. Don’t forget to gaze upon Sweden while you’re there thanks to the views overlooking the Oresund.
If you get back in the early afternoon and still want to explore, then our recommendation would be the Museum of Art and Design. You’ll see many of the inspirations behind the works of designers like Poul Henningsen, Kaare Klint, and Arne Jacobsen that are sprinkled in-between exhibits that take a look at the history of Danish design. Textiles, ceramics, and other examples of visual arts will give you a glimpse of why Copenhagen and Denmark have developed in such a wonderful way over the years!
After a long day out and about, you might want to avoid a heavy meal. If you’d prefer to just grab a light sandwich so that your stomach settles well, then head on over to Ida Davidsen for one of the best sandwiches in the world today. With over 250 variations of smørredbrød, a local snacking favorite, you’ll be able to enjoy this open-faced rye sandwich with everything from beetroot to mackarel. Most menu offerings will cost you just a ten-spot.
And For Your Final Days In Copenhagen…
Some of probably asked about now “Why haven’t you included Roseborg Castle on this list of essential things to do in Copenhagen?” Here’s why: you save the best for last! This castle looks like the epitome of something you’d read about in a Hans Christian Anderson fable. A beautiful morning is the perfect time to stroll about the gardens as you walk past the guarding lions that indicate the path to walk. Inside the castle, you’ll find incredible ornaments in the throne room that will make you feel like royalty, even if they really don’t want you to sit in one of the chairs! Massive murals line the walls of the castle and while you’re looking at this incredible displays of artistic genius, make sure you take a few moments to look up at the ceiling.
During the Easter season, the castle brings out the coronoation carpets so they can grace the Great Hall once again with their splendor. They date back to the 17th century and were used at every coronation of the Danish kings that once ruled the land. If you don’t make it for this display, you can still be dazzled by the Marble Room. Recently redone to replicate the grandeur of what it once was, you’ll be surrounded by putti and 17th century exhibits that will give you a glimpse to the wealth that Copenhagen and Denmark had during this period of time.
Are you ready to go to Copenhagen? Whether you’re visiting the city for a quick weekend away or you have an extended holiday in mind, there is always something fresh and new that Copenhagen can offer you come rain or shine.
