Discover Dubrovnik

Dubbed the Pearl of the Adriatic, Dubrovnik is a seriously beautiful city break or holiday destination – but it is also one that has far more to offer than good looks alone. From its medieval walls to the vestiges of modern conflicts, Dubrovnik is overflowing with history and makes a great destination that mixes traditional pursuits of sun-seeking and ice-cream eating with a generous dollop of culture.

This wonderful city is home to stunning architecture and many outstanding landmarks, not least of all the impressive city walls that encircle the Old City. These ramparts have protected Dubrovnik for centuries and the views from the top are breath-taking.

The city is ideally located next to some truly stunning beaches and is within easy reach of some of Croatia’s most picturesque islands and coastal resorts. Banje Beach is one of the closest to the city – a sandy-pebbly stretch that usually has calm waters.

Landmarks of note in the city include the Rectors Palace, the Sponza Palace, St Johns Fort, the large Onfrios fountain and the main street Placa, which is lined by Baroque buildings and is truly beautiful in its simplicity.

Dubrovnik is a spectacular city from any angle, but nothing quite compares to looking down on it from above. While there is a road that winds its way up to the top of Srd Hill, by far the most exciting way to get to the top is by cable car.

There are few better ways to begin your trip to the city than by taking a walk along its historic walls, which are roughly 2 km long and enclose the old city completely. It’s is a great way to get your bearings and pick out things you’d like to take a closer look at.

Considering the small size of the old city, it’s home to an impressive number of museums – though you’ll find some are scattered just outside the city walls too. Some of them are housed in some of Dubrovnik’s most atmospheric buildings, which are attractions in themselves, doubling your reasons to visit!

Visiting Dubrovnik and not walking down Stradun is all but impossible. The city’s main thoroughfare, this street runs between Pile Gate and Luza Square, and is packed with tempting ice cream parlours, souvenir shops, charming cafes and historical buildings.
