Dunkerque

Dunkerque, or perhaps “Dunkirk” if you prefer, is one of the northernmost cities in France, sitting right on the English Channel. It was originally a fishing village of the Flemish people and because of its location, was often subjected to raids throughout its history. The name is familiar to many because it was a privateer base for more than a century thanks to it being claimed by four different countries at the same time. France gained complete control through a deal with England and turned it into a fortified port. It’s more of a lunch destination than anything else, notable because it is the city’s first organic restaurant. A journey to some of the city’s landmarks after a good lunch seems only fitting, so the free-standing belfry should definitely be at the top of your list. The Liar’s Tower is also a highlight, as is the church of Saint Eloi. Many head down to see Dunkerque’s town hall as well.
