There are a great many fascinating countries in northern Europe, each of them offering tourists the chance to find out more about this fascinating region and to soak up some of the highly impressive culture. One of the most popular is Denmark, a nation which offers a pleasing combination of mainland Europe and Scandinavia.

From the captivating city of Copenhagen, one of the most iconic capitals on the continent, to a terrific selection of peaceful rural destinations, Denmark offers something to suit all tastes. If you’ve never been to this wonderful country before; you really are in for a pleasant surprise.

Most visitors to Denmark opt to stay in the nation’s beautiful capital. Copenhagen is located in the east of the country and it’s one of the most popular city break destinations in Europe. It’s the perfect place for anyone who wants to explore, but it’s important to realise there are several more locations which offer ideal bases.

Some other great places to stay in Denmark include: Aalborg, a pretty university city in the north, and Esbjerg, a port on the western coast of the Jutland Peninsula. Odense is also a good choice, partly because it’s home to a number of charming old world buildings.

Denmark is more than just about amazing vistas. The food culture within this nation is also at the top of its class. It begins with a visit to Noma, which is rated as the best restaurant in the world. If that’s not in your budget, then there are fantastic street options available in even the smaller communities. Don’t forget to try some of the great Danish classics like meatballs with apple and celery in a spicy curry for a memorable sandwich.

Denmark also brings history alive with every footstep. Whether you’re walking down the streets of Copenhagen or you’re out visiting one of the nation’s stunning castles, there is something to discover around every fjord. You can even choose to stay at an authentic Viking camp if you prefer.

When you’re done exploring outside, be sure to step inside to enjoy the many fashion centers that Denmark has to offer. From a corner market to some of the world’s top brands, you’ll want to make sure you’ve brought some extra luggage just so you can take everything home.

Denmark is one of the best places in the world to have an active holiday. The mild weather is complimented perfectly by the incredible options to explore, allowing you to visit any city and have the perfect time away.

Best of Denmark

Of all the landmarks and attractions in Denmark, and there are a great many, none have become quite as iconic as the Little Mermaid statue on Copenhagen’s waterfront. Like the Manneken Pis statue in Brussels, it’s not particularly large or overly showy, yet it has become a hugely popular symbol of the city in which it is located.

Many people who are yet to visit Denmark may be surprised by the quality of the beaches that are found in the country. One of the finest is undoubtedly at Tisvildeleje, a charming place some 60 kilometres north of Copenhagen. Whether you want to enjoy a little beachside nightlife or you simply fancy a day of sunbathing, this is the place to go. With so much to see and do in this nation, sometimes a little rest and recuperation needs to be on the agenda.

Denmark has a rich heritage, and it’s impossible to explore more of this without hearing about the Vikings. In many parts of the country, you’ll find museums and galleries dedicated to this period of history, perhaps the most fascinating of all is the Ladby Viking Museum. There are a great many artefacts on display here, and the most impressive is the Ladby Ship, a Viking grave ship that has been carefully restored.

Anyone who has ever visited a major Scandinavian city will know the locals love to shop, and in Copenhagen retail therapy is a way of life. The Strøget area is the most popular of all with both residents and tourists alike, featuring a huge range of stores selling everything from tiny ornaments to large pieces of furniture. The area is also home to a number of cafés, bars and restaurants; so you can always relax when the shopping gets to be too tiring.

If you have children with you, or even if you’re just a child at heart, no holiday to Denmark will be complete without a trip to the highly enjoyable Legoland Billund. This exciting theme park based on the famous construction toy that Denmark gave to the world is a popular tourist attraction, which offers a range of activities for visitors of all ages.
