Stroll back in time in Cidade

Velha Faro’s walled old town (Cidade Velha) is a charming part of the city well worth spending the afternoon in. As you walk up through the Arco Vila, you’ll come to the main square where the grand old Cathedral stands. Climb the stone staircase to the top for brilliant panoramic views of Faro. Dotted around these small, winding streets you’ll find lots of little tavernas, serving a variety of dishes from traditional seafood to Portuguese tapas. Faro’s diverse history is explained within the magnificent walls of the Museo Municipal and there’s also a small art gallery displaying the works of contemporary artists from the country.

Relax on Praia do Faro

A twenty minute bus journey out of Faro takes you to Praia do Faro. Here, the lovely white sand goes for miles in both directions and the sea’s waves make for great fun to splash around in. As well as the usual beach-related activities, there are places along the sand where you can try your hand at water sports as well as a number of little cafes to grab some food – grilled sardines are a local favourite and worth a try for seafood lovers.

Sample a seafood cataplana

Named after the cast iron cooking dish it is prepared in, cataplana is a sumptuous seafood stew comprising the freshest ingredients from the nearby sea. Many restaurants in the area serve this delectable dish as it is a local speciality of the Algarve.
