What to see and do in Fox Glacier ?

A Fox Glacier holiday is all about action and adventure and immersing yourself in the stunning glacier country landscape. Try a hike into the rainforests, jet boat up a glacial river, helicopter over the spectacular mountain peaks or enjoy a breathtaking guided walk on the world famous Fox Glacier. For those who like to take it a little easier, there are some indulgent Franz Josef glacial hot pools and spa treatments.

Most people come to the township of Fox Glacier to explore the awe-inspiring natural ice formation of the same name, Fox Glacier. Named after the former New Zealand Prime Minister Sir William Fox, the glacier cuts an impressive 13km path through the mountains and no matter how you choose to explore it, this will be a highlight of your Fox Glacier holiday. It’s one of the most accessible glaciers in the world.

There are walks to suit every age and ability including an easy one hour valley walk to the foot of the glacier, an eight hour guided ice climbing adventure or a heli-walk that takes you to a pristine part of the glacier for an exhilarating hike. You can also take to the skies in a helicopter and land on the snowfields above the glacier for stunning views of this vast ice wonderland. Real adrenaline junkies can skydive above the glacier, which has to be one of the most breathtaking places in the world for skydiving.

The other must-do near the town of Fox Glacier is a walk around the beautiful Lake Matheson. Known as the ‘mirror lake’, it’s famous for the beautiful reflections of Mt Cook on its smooth water.

Further down the coast, wildlife lovers will love the rugged Gillespies Beach where you can visit a seal colony. Other wildlife attractions near Fox Glacier include the kiwi breeding program in neighbouring Franz Josef, the White Heron Sanctuary in Whataroa and the chance to spot kiwi in the wild at Okarito.

If you like kayaking, you can explore the pristine environments of Lake Mapourika or the Okarito Lagoon.Avid walkers can tackle the many walks into the lush rainforests including the Minnehaha walk which meanders through moss covered trees and ferns or an all-day hiking adventure on the Copland Track.

At the end of a tiring day, there’s nothing better than a soak in one of the three glacier hot pools in nearby Franz Josef.
