Fraser Island

Known as ‘K’Gari’ or ‘Paradise’ to the local Aborigines, Fraser Island is a unique and wonderful place for a holiday. Ferries and flights depart from Hervey Bay, around four hours north of Brisbane but those driving will need a four-wheel drive with adequate clearance to explore this beautiful sand island, which does not have any paved roads. Crafted by the wind and waves over thousands of centuries, Fraser Island is 120 kilometres long and 1840 kilometres square, making it the world’s largest sand island. Within its extraordinary ecosystem rainforests thrive alongside huge sand dunes or ‘sandblows’, sparkling blue freshwater lakes, swamps and mangroves. Birdwatchers are in for a treat with so many species to see, while all nature enthusiasts can look forward to seeing many different reptiles and amphibians. A World Heritage listed site since 1992, the island and its unique wildlife and resources are now being preserved for future generations.

Most trails are well defined and will pass one of the island’s many spectacular freshwater lakes, which are an excellent place to swim or eat a picnic. Lake McKenzie is the most well-known of Fraser Island’s lakes and a wonderful place for swimming and relaxation. With crystal clear water and a beautiful white sand beach, this tranquil spot is the ideal place to unwind and enjoy nature at its very best.

Fishing is another of the island’s great attractions, and the island’s 75-Five Mile Beach is considered one of the best places in the world for beach fishing.
