Gent, also known as Ghent, is an popular destination in Belgium. The word “Gent” is actually the Dutch spelling for the city of “Ghent” and the two terms are often used interchangeably.
With roots in the Middle Ages, Gent is one of the most beautiful cities in Belgium. Some believe that the Romans may have initially inhabited the land, but the first official settlements of note occurred around 650 when two abbeys were founded.
You can immerse yourself in the culture and history of Belgium by seeing the myriad abbeys, beguinages, churches, castles, historic landmarks, and museums strewn throughout the city of Gent.
Float on down the Leie River and you will see this history on display in one of the most unique experiences this city has to offer.
Almost all of the medieval architecture from the Middle Ages has been preserved in Gent or authentically restored. The city center is free from vehicles, so you’re free to wander at your leisure to see everything, including Saint Nicholas and Saint Bavo. Don’t forget about the impressive Gravensteen if you love castles.
Culinary traditions are strong in Gent, including praline chocolates and a hot mustard that is called Tierenteyn. Don’t forget to pick up at least one mastel while in town. If the bagels have been blessed, then it is believed that you’ll be immunized against rabies. Ask for an authentic waterzooi, which is a freshwater fish stew made from the local catch. Many restaurants offer the stew, but make it with chicken today instead.
Gent also has a number of nature reserves that are perfect for a visit on a nice day. With over 300 hectares of space reserved for recreation and exploration, there are trails to explore, bird-watching to enjoy, and a number of dragonflies that come out around sunset if you’re out by the water.
What Gent provides is the chance to get to know yourself a little bit better. Explore where you wish, let the world pass you by, and remember that Thursdays you’re encouraged to follow a vegetarian diet.
