Year-round ski and sun vacations can be had in Kaprun and Innsbruck. Salzburg and Linz are beautiful cities full of charm and picturesque spots with their own history.
No matter if you favor active vacations or culture breaks, don’t worry, Austria has both. The Austrian Alps have famous ski resorts and fun-filled activities perfect for family trips, romantic retreats, and getaways with friends.
Head to the Tyrol –or Tirol- region in the west for the city of Innsbruck and its most visited attraction: Swarovski Kristallwelten – and yes, Swarovski as in the crystals. Gaze at the gothic Goldenes Dachl and Museum for a brief lesson in history and unsettling tournament helmets. Travel across the country from Innsbruck to Vienna via train for an epic adventure with plenty of time to enjoy the scenery.
Vienna, the nation’s capital, is straddled across either riverbank of the Danube. Stroll along its art-nouveau architecture and experience a performance in one of its many opera houses, concert halls, and delicious cafes. The city is close to the borders with the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary for a day trip to Brno, Bratislava or Budapest.
Lienz in the west has a fantastic archaeological site and modern museum, Aguntum, of a once-flourished Roman city, complete with interactive exhibits for the inner child in all of us and reconstructions for a better grasp at the bigger picture. Similar in spelling but different in atmosphere, head to Linz, located along the Danube in the north, for one of Austria’s oldest churches, Martinskirche, and ultramodern buildings, the Ars Electronica Center.
Salzburg: the home of Mozart is famous for more than just the Von Trapp family. It is full of lovely baroque buildings, a large castle, and a city center named as a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is very close to the border if you want to pop over to Germany for a day on the train.
