Barbados is a beautiful island in the Lesser Antilles, situated a few hundred miles north of the Venezuelan coast. Initially inhabited by South American tribes, Barbados was a British colony from 1627 until the mid-20th century. It boasts a booming tourism industry, world-famous rum, excellent seafood, beautiful beaches and a pristine island interior. Bajans, as locals are known, are renowned for their welcoming nature and hospitality, while the island is famous for its rum, nightlife and tropical resorts. The island also enjoys some of the finest weather on the planet year-round, making it an ideal destination for sun-chasers!
A popular saying among locals is, “Life didn’t begin in Barbados. It was just perfected here.” With a lively culture, unique music, excellent cuisine, and some of the world’s finest beaches and resorts, it’s not a very difficult argument for locals to make.
While most tourists choose to stay on the coast, keep in mind that Barbados is a small island. Wherever you stay, you can rent a car or take a Land Rover tour to the interior or the east coast in very little time. The East coast and Bathsheba, tend to be the best spots for surfing and other ocean sports, whereas the west coast offers nice, tranquil beaches for lounging around and soaking up the sun. It’s easy and relatively inexpensive to go on a snorkeling picnic, or to charter a boat for sightseeing or a tour around the island.
The Barbados Wildlife preserve is a must-see attraction. It’s beautiful, untouched jungles are the stuff of imagination – you’ll think you’ve stumbled on to a film set. The locals are also extremely helpful, which makes tourism on this little island a real treat, and English is the island’s official language, so it’s very easy for native speakers of English to get around. US Dollars are also accepted almost universally, although the Barbados Dollar is the official currency of the island.
Calypso and Reggae are the most popular musical genres on the island, and it’s very easy to catch a great band at a small venue most nights of the week. Bigger acts also tend to stop on Barbados during an international or South American tour, and sometimes, when Cruise Ships dock, you can catch some great blues or jazz from cruise-ship bands.
Most importantly, Barbados is a place to relax. Come here, rest your weary head, relax on the beach with a glass of the island’s famous rum punch, and enjoy yourself. None of the fast-paced hustle and bustle of a big American or European city, just sunshine, good food, good music, and a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. Come see how Bajans have perfected life – it may be that you’ll learn something you can take with you that’s as valuable as the rejuvenating vacation you’ll have in Barbados.
