The people of Belize call their home “the jewel,” and on your Belize vacation you’ll discover why this stunning Central American country is so treasured by both residents and visitors. Start with the coastline: the Cayes and Atolls area is comprised hundreds of picture-perfect Caribbean islands off the country’s coast. One of the largest, Ambergris Caye, is home to some of the best diving in the world, and is the country’s top vacation destination. Belize is also known for its rich collection of ancient Maya sites, rain forest and amazing cave system, and friendly, laid-back atmosphere. It all adds up to a tropical vacation paradise.
Whether you’re looking for a luxury resort or you’d prefer a low-key, more personal type of accommodation, you’ll find what you’re looking for in Belize. Families, couples, and groups of friends can all find places to stay that will help them create the perfect Belize vacation. Ambergris Caye boasts luxury resorts, while smaller islands have mostly low-rise, family-run hotels. The Placencia Peninsula on Belize’s southern coast is the country’s up-and-coming Belize vacation spot, and many hotels in this area are newly built and are known for high-end luxury. When visiting the rainforest area in the Cayo district, your options include either resorts or moderately priced traditional lodges.
Popular Ambergris Caye is the place to stay to visit the Blue Hole, the world famous dive and snorkeling destination, and the Hol Chan Reserve. You can also simply enjoy the beaches or lounge poolside and soak in that gorgeous weather.
You’ll feel like Indiana Jones when you take an unforgettable trek to Maya cave site Actun Tunil Muknal or fondly known as “ATM”. Guided tours of this site involve a hike and a short swim, but the experience is so spectacular that many visitors name the caves as their all-time top vacation site. Other top Maya sites include Caracol, a 30-acre complex in the Cayo district, and the temple Altun Ha, convenient to Ambergris Cay and the most visited Maya site in Belize.
Top Placencia experiences are diving and snorkeling around the smaller, brilliantly colored reefs at Silk Caye or Laughingbird Caye. Take a guided tour through Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary to see wild cats, deer, toucan, and the native tapir, or mountain cow.
Immerse yourself in a rainforest in the Cayo district. More cannot-miss attractions include Chass Creek Natural History Centre and Blue Morpho Butterfly Farm, a butterfly-breeding center. Explore a different landscape at Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve, located in the high country of Belize and home of the spectacular Caracol ruins. Both you and the kids will love visiting the interactive Iguana Conservation Project in San Ignacio.
The capital of Belize City is home to many of the country’s top attractions, like the highly-rated Belize Zoo, featuring all native animals in natural habitat settings, and the Museum of Belize with Maya artifacts and treasures from more recent periods in the country’s history. Don’t forget to visit the Community Baboon Sanctuary, home to more than 1,000 adorable howler monkeys.
A spectacular addition to your Belize vacation is a drive along the Hummingbird Highway, which cuts through lush green mountains, citrus groves, and has not to be missed views.
