Stretching from the Amazon rainforest to the sandy shores of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil covers a lush and exotic landmass nearly equal to that of the continental United States. With yearly celebrations like Carnival and the upcoming Olympic Games, as well as the World Cup, Brazil is sure to be on fire for years to come. Its citizens live in wooden huts and skyscrapers, on ranches and beaches, all united by a fierce sense of national pride. The torrential currents of the Amazon River feed the heart of the country, spawning a center of biodiversity unmatched anywhere on the planet.
Rio de Janeiro has a reputation all its own: from the majesty of the statue of Christ the Redeemer overlooking the city to the primal energy of Carnival, this coastal gem is a truly unique place. Head to Amazonas for a close look at the forests, rivers, and animals that have inspired artists, environmentalists, and explorers the world over. From the magical Iguazu Falls to the plains and grasslands of the pampas, Brazil’s natural beauty will not disappoint.
No Brazil vacation would be complete without a visit to Rio de Janeiro, the storied city on the beach. Extending out under the majestic arms of Christ the Redeemer, the iconic statue that presides over the city on the peak of Corcovado Mountain. Rio is one of the world’s largest cities, and offers all the pleasures of a fine metropolis, with the added benefit of the location: beaches like Copacabana and Ipanema, to name a few. In addition to the rich natural setting, Rio boasts a rich cultural heritage, full of the sweet notes of samba, Bossa Nova, and salsa.
Rio is also home to a host of culinary traditions, offering the best that South America has to offer in the way of steak, seafood, and more. Then, of course, there’s Carnival, a party so immense that the city keeps permanent grandstands for the main attraction: the parade. One of the biggest shows on earth, the carnival parade lures millions of visitors to the city each year for a sight of parading samba schools, some of which allow visiting revelers to join in on the fun.
The next few years will add even more excitement to a country already known for its love of the party. Let’s just say that when the FIFA World Cup comes around in 2014, it will be the carnival of soccer. Brazil has a long and storied history in the beautiful game. The national team holds the world record for most FIFA Cup victories with five, and the team should be energized by one of the most exuberant home crowds in the world.
Teams from sixty-four different countries will descend on Brazil come June, and the madness will be legendary. The World Cup, like any great sporting event, is an excuse for an outpouring of natural and cultural pride on a grand scale, and isn’t something that anyone, no matter their level of involvement with soccer, should miss.
Brazil has much to offer besides parties, however: the nation is home to the world’s lungs-the Amazon Rainforest. Fed by the largest river in the world, the rainforest is a lush tropical paradise, hosting thousands of species of plants, animals, birds, fish, insects, and more. The rainforest is a national and international treasure and a must-see for any serious traveler. Pictures a worth a thousand words, but in the Amazon, they may carry even more weight. Come see for yourself; there’s nothing quite like it.
