The Mediterranean island of Cyprus has welcomed travelers for thousands of years. The island enjoys one of the world’s finest climates, warmest waters, and most stunning sunsets. Today, the island is a meeting place for Greek and Turkish cultures, resulting in a rich blend of music and food for all visitors. Cyprus’ cultural history dates back to the times of its earliest settlers, with cave drawings of bygone days giving way to the colleges and museums of today. Of course, the beautiful beaches are also a huge draw.
Visitors won’t want to miss the capital, Nicosia, which ranks as one of the world’s richest cities and displays its wealth through stunning architecture and beautiful cultural centers. Limassol, another large city, is home to an important port, which brings in plenty of travelers each year with its famed festivals. Strovolos hosts great local musicians in its Municipal Theater and Music Hall. You can have a spectacular view of the sea when you stay in coastal Paphos in the west or bustling [Larnaca]/hotels/cyprus/larnaca) in the east for phenomenal sunrises.
Cyprus is home to a melting pot of distinct cultures, each with their own art, music, food, literature, and history. This means that visitors can immerse themselves in multiple traditions that would normally be offered on a vacation to the Mediterranean. Traditional dances such as the sousta, tatsia, and tsifteteli danced throughout the villages draw on influences from neighboring Greece, Turkey, and other Arab traditions. Cypriot cuisine follows traditions that were set down in Byzantine ages and even earlier Eastern Mediterranean dishes, with Halloumi cheese, seafood, grilled lamb, and a wide array of fruits, nuts, and vegetable dishes topping menus.
The city of Limassol is a must for any visitors; Limassol is home to one of Cyprus’ nine castles. This ancient structure dates back 1000 years, and supposedly observed the marriage of Richard the Lionheart. The city also houses multiple museums, ranging from architecture to folk art, as well as gardens and famous sculptures. The city has seen many rulers, ranging from the Knights Templar to the Venetians and Ottomans, resulting in a variety of architectural styles and cultural imprints.
Go back even further in time with a visit to ancient Paphos. The town has its own Archaeological Park and a nearby Tomb of Kings to explore! Spend a romantic evening along the coast in Paphos –the famed location of Aphrodite’s birth – and enjoy the slowly setting sun cascading into the Mediterranean. Larnaca is another great place for a romantic setting, as well as a famous beach resort town of Cyprus.
Cyprus’ incredible natural beauty can be best enjoyed by visiting one of its many national parks. Akamas Peninsula National Park protects an area deemed a ‘world heritage site’ by UNESCO. The region is home to steep cliffs, cavernous gorges, and beautiful harbors, often with fantastic rock formations just past the water’s edge. Other parks house over 300 bird species on yearly migrations, tying them to ecosystems all around the Mediterranean.
