For a more detailed look at castles, visit the country’s best, including Neuschwanstein Castle on the Romantic Road in Bavaria, the inspiration for Disney’s castle. There’s also the beautiful Hohenzollern in the Black Forest; Bavaria’s Schloss Herrenschiemsee, modeled after Versailles, and the ruins of the gothic Heidelberg Castle in none other than Heidelberg.

The Bavarian Alps is the place for outdoor adventure. In the summer, take a serious hike or a leisurely walk and enjoy the beauty of the wildflowers. In winter, the paths transform to cross-country trails, and there are plenty of spots for skiing and snowboarding. For more fresh air fun, visit the resort towns of the Black Forest, like Baiersbonn and Baden-Baden, and be sure to make time for Germany’s largest amusement park, Europa Park, boasting Europe’s highest roller coaster.
