Athens is one of the few places in the world one can take one step into Classical Greece, another into Roman times, and a third back into the present. Vacationers have traveled to Athens since antiquity – and stayed for the vibrant culture and trendy, friendly company. There are countless sights to see, from the Acropolis to the astounding National Archaeological Museum to the modern Olympic Stadium.

Stay in the heart of Athens in charming Plaka, surrounded by the many souvenir shops and tavernas right near the Acropolis. Perfect for both families and couples, here you’re close to the Acropoli and Monastiraki metro stations for lines to the airport, ferry port, and spectacular National Archaeological Museum- a definite must-see even for non-historians. Outside this area are many downtown hotels and apartments within walking distance of Syntagma Square, the shopping district, and the hotspots of Greek tourism, many offering stunning views of the Acropolis from their rooftop restaurants and bars. There are also several comfortable and modern hotels near Athens’ airport and Piraeus for jetsetters and short stays.

One of the most famous sites from ancient Greece in Athens, the Parthenon sits on the jagged Acropolis; but don’t miss out on spectacular sites nearby, like the Temple of Hephaestus and the Odeon of Herodes Atticus amphitheater. Check out the National Archaeological Museum near Victoria station for the largest and most beautiful collection of pieces throughout time and space of Greece.

Wander through the archaeological site of Olympia in the Peloponnese and see where ancient Olympic athletes trained. Run the length of the Hippodrome racetrack with your kids or friends, and explore the various temples and Museum of Olympia, dedicated to the Olympic games first held in 776BC.

Another not-to-miss attraction is the site of Delphi in Central Greece, and its breathtaking view from the top of the mountainous site is worth the steep climb, and the town of Itea on the Gulf of Corinth is an excellent place to relax and eat delicious seafood.

Mykonos draws both the super-rich and frugal travelers to Elia Beach, with restaurants and a water park, and Ornos Beach, perfect for families. Take an excursion to the nearby island of Delos, an archeological site, which is known in mythology as the birthplace of Apollo, son of Zeus. Indulge in the healthiest cuisine in the world, complete with divine olive oil, tomatoes to die for, and freshly-caught fish when on the islands.

Santorini is famed for its Aegean sunsets, dramatic cliffs, and black sand beaches; soak in the island’s beauty with a walk around one of the cliffside villages. Explore one of the lesser-known islands nearby for tranquil days in paradise.

Crete is the mythical birthplace of Zeus and a natural wonder in itself. Visitors flock to the island today for history—Minoans, Romans, and Venetians all made their mark here- and the photogenic beaches, including palm-lined Kommos in the south, and turquoise Elafonisi in the west.
