Kenya is a must-see for any lover of African ecosystems. From the warmth of the Indian Ocean to the snow-capped triad of Mount Kenya, the east African nation is full of gorgeous vistas and varied flora and fauna. The shores of Lake Victoria, the world’s second-largest freshwater body, give way to temperate forests and eventually rolling savannah. Fertile soil supports the growth of coffee, tea, and flowers, among other exports. The rich Swahili tradition colors the landscape as much as the wildlife, providing plenty of opportunities for cultural immersion and exchange.

Kenya is a magical nation, with plenty of places to explore like the impressive Rift Valley and the bold Mount Kenya Forest. A top must-see is Mombasa, a picturesque island in the Indian Ocean that connects to the mainland via bridge. Kenya’s proud ascendance to modernity is best displayed by its capital city, Nairobi. Called the ‘city in the sun,’ the city is a sprawling modern metropolis full of culture and latest music of Kenya. Stay in small towns near the greatest ecological sites, or in the bustling capital; there’s a place in Kenya for every kind of traveler.

Not too long ago, Nairobi was known only as a center for traders and safaris, which still take off from the bustling capital. However, that tradition has been augmented by a huge growth in commerce and cultural attractions. Museums and parks harken back to the city’s past. Just outside city limits lies Nairobi National Park, home to herds of giraffe, zebra, and more. Rhinos and cheetahs can also be spotted in the park, sometimes a mere half-hour from downtown. Other parks lie within easy driving distance, offering the adventurous a shot at rock climbing, hiking, and even whitewater rafting.

Nairobi has become a center of creativity in literature, film, and music for years. Benga, a unique Kenyan music genre that fuses elements of jazz and traditional Kenyan music, was developed in Nairobi, which is also seeing an explosion of African hip-hop. Perhaps most surprising is the sudden explosion of electronic music in Kenyan nightclubs, where the aggressive bass lines of genres like drum and bass and dubstep have taken hold. Nairobi is a unique combination of natural habitat, traditional cultural influences, and progressive commerce and creativity.

Mombasa is a center of culture and commerce, as traditional clothing like the bui bui can be seen against the backdrop of the crystal-clear waters of the harbor. Ferry rides to the mainland are also available for those who prefer riding above the waves. Be sure to visit the fort, a remnant of past wars between the Portuguese and Arabs. History is alive in Mombasa; you won’t want to miss it.

Take a trip to Mount Kenya Forest: the peak is Africa’s second-highest, and was considered sacred by Kenya’s people for years. Three snow-capped peaks tower over the surrounding countryside, providing the adventurous with a picturesque challenge. The summit trip takes between 3-5 days, and can feature some technical climbing depending on which peak is summited. The journey winds through lush forests full of wildlife, unique flora and fauna, and year-long snow. The mountain lies within striking distance of Nairobi, making it a convenient trip for any, even those just looking to admire the peak from the lush highlands that make up the foothills.

No trip to Kenya would be complete without a look or adventure into the Great Rift Valley. Caused by geologic phenomena, the valley runs through the country, much like the Grand Canyon in Arizona, only bigger. Multiple lakes and volcanoes both active and dormant can be found in the valleys confines, which are a great testament to the natural forces that created it.
