The city still retains the walls and fortifications the Spanish built to protect it from pirates and marauders, since this jewel on the gulf attracted the attention of some of the most famous buccaneers of all time, including Sir Francis Drake.

Campeche’s most intriguing historic site lies 40 miles east of the city and is most definitely worth a visit. The ancient Maya city of Edzná offers an incredible glimpse into the region’s native history. Located in the bottom of a valley, the city consists of a complex system of dams and canals that used to flood during the rainy season. The breathtaking main plaza contains fascinating structures such as an old ball court, but the most impressive building by far is the Pyramid of the Five Floors. A climb to the top of the Pyramid is worth the hike just for the unforgettable views.

Be sure to stop and see the famous mask stucco mask of the god Itzámná inside one of the pyramid’s rooms: it was recently discovered that on certain dates, the setting sun directly illuminates the creator-gods face. If you stay for sunset, be sure to stay for the light and sound show “The Light of the Itzás,” which celebrates and honors the traditions of the Maya who once lived there.

Chiapas

The Mexican state of Chiapas is quickly turning its tide and becoming a popular tourist destination thanks to its incredible historic sites and astounding natural scenery. Its lush rainforests are home to some beautiful varieties of flora and fauna, and the mysterious Maya ruins nested within them are some of the most unique in the entire country. Charming cities such as San Cristóbal de las Casas and Comitán blend beautiful colonial architecture with vibrant modern lifestyles. Of course, no Chiapas vacation would be complete without a boat cruise down to see the awe-inspiring Sumidero Canyon.

San Cristóbal de las Casas is quickly becoming the most popular choice for visitors to spend their Chiapas vacations. This beautiful colonial city with its cobblestone streets and charming open-air markets is an important cultural center brimming with fantastic museums, restaurants and cafes. Comitan is Chiapas’s hidden secret: it has all of the attractions of San Cristóbal with only a fraction of the tourists. You can spend your time exploring the city’s colonial architecture and museums and your nights wining and dining in the cafes and restaurants that line the historic plazas.

The beautiful city of San Cristóbal de las Casas is the perfect spot to act as your home base on your Chiapas vacation. An incredible mix of the old and news, this colonial city is the cultural capital of the state. San Cristóbal is brimming with historical attractions such as stunning Spanish churches and excellent museums, as well as all of the luxuries of modern life, including chic restaurants, hip cafes, and wonderful wine bars.

Just a few miles away from San Cristóbal is the native community of San Juan Chamula, which is worth a visit for the unique glimpse it offers into Mexico’s ancient cultural heritage. It’s definitely worth a day trip to see the Mayan ruins at Yaxchilán & Bonampak nestled in the lush rainforest. The incredible murals which still retain their original paint and the intricate reliefs carved into the temple walls are beautiful remnants of the ancient past. The sites are also perfect for getting acquainted with some of the region’s wildlife; you might see an imposing crocodile lounging on the banks of the Rio Usumacinta or a mischievous monkey peering at you from the trees.

Chiapas is also famous because of its astoundingly beautiful natural scenery. The waters of Agua Azul natural park are so stunningly blue they seem dyed, but the effect is all natural. The dozens of roaring waterfalls that pour crystal-clear water onto the limestone riverbed create a truly awe-inspiring image. The national park of Lagunas de Montebello is made up of 50 equally stunning lagoons, each of which has its own unique hue. Although swimming is discouraged, there are few things more relaxing than canoeing or kayaking on the surface.

If you only take the time to see one natural wonder, go see Sumidero Canyon. Boat trips leave from the town of Chiapa de Corzo, and as you cruise downstream you’ll be treated to some truly jaw-dropping views.

Colima

Colima is a beautiful western Mexican state on the shores of the warm Pacific Ocean. One of Mexico’s wealthiest states, Colima enjoys beautiful weather and stunning landscapes. From volcanic islands to peaceful lagoons, there’s no shortage of picturesque locales to explore and enjoy. Major cities like Colima, Manzanillo, and Tecoman are centers of commerce and culture, with vibrant traditions of music, dance, and other arts complemented with delicious food and drink.

Colima, the eponymous capital, is home to incredible archeological sites that contain artifacts from prehistoric and Aztec societies. Tecoman is famed for its beautiful beaches, with plenty of great breaks that make the destination ideal for surfers. Manzanillo is a bustling port city, home of great resorts and a mysterious green flash that lights up the sky at sunset. Villa de Alvarez is a unique city, home to intense bullfighting competitions. No matter where you stay during your Colima vacation, you’ll be able to rest easy thanks to the great hospitality of the locals.

If you stay in the capital, make sure to head to the incredible archaeological site of El Chanal. This ancient temple was dedicated to the wind god, Ehecatl. Today, you can still see carvings etched into stone hundreds of years ago, and climb steps that once were frequented by Aztec priests.

Manzanillo is the destination for beach-lovers. Many incredible beaches can be found nearby, with wide, sandy expanses perfect for sunbathing or any number of beach sports and games. Warm Pacific waters make swimming, snorkeling, and surfing accessible all year long. Great fishing abounds off the coast, with plentiful sailfish and other species.

Colima has been inhabited for thousands of years, and over that time, a diverse blend of cultures has added to rich traditions of expression. Folk dances tell the story of the Spanish conquest in flamboyant displays of skill that are often accompanied by colorful costumes. Another traditional art is the pastorela, a short play with religious content.

A great way to dive into local culture is by attending one of Colima’s annual events. Many of these celebrations are religious in origin, often showcasing a mixture of Catholic and native beliefs. Great feast days like the Epiphany and the day of Saint Philip of Jesus bring thousands to urban centers in displays of local culinary, and musical traditions. Dia de los Muertos – or Day of the Dead- as in many Mexican states, is the year’s biggest festival, with elaborately costumed participants celebrating the memory of those who have died, in addition to agricultural exhibitions, parades, and more.

If you’re a fan of the outdoors, Colima vacations will be unforgettable. The region is replete with incredible hiking and biking trails that take adventurers through and above verdant landscapes filled with lakes, rivers, and a variety of plants and animals.

Durango

Kept well above sea level by the Sierra Madre Occidental- a unique geologic formation that has changed weather patterns and made the region habitable- Durango isn’t what most people picture when they think of Mexico. Filled with lush forests, cascading rivers, and towering peaks, the region is full of scenic vistas that draw plenty of visitors each year. The wet summer months feed fertile soil, driving a rich agricultural sector that dates back to pre-Colombian times. From native ruins to local legends, Durango has a rich history to offer all who stop by.

The capital, Durango, is a beautiful assemblage of world influences, with varied architectural styles coloring the city’s landscape. Gomez Palacio is a progressive place, driven by industrial activity. The city of Lerdo sits near Durango’s border, has an unbeatable combination: freshly made ice cream and stunning city gardens. Ciudad Guadalupe Victoria, named after Mexico’s first president, is full of testaments to the nation’s history. Santiago Papasquiaro, and agricultural hub, also produces consistently strong bands and musicians.

The capital city, Durango, is a powerful center of commerce and culture. From stunning architecture to lively nightlife, the city is full of color and life. Festivals like the month-long Feria Nacional De Durango are a great way to dive into Mexico’s culture. The ‘caldillo’ is a classic beef soup often prepared with chiles. The region is also known for delicious jams and liquors.

Once you’re out of the city, the real adventure begins. Durango has outdoor activities galore, from mountain climbing to river rafting. The growing sector of ecotourism brings visitors to the area while keeping a commitment to preserve the environment. This allows unique opportunities for kayaking, mountain biking, and more, all with a smaller footprint than before. And the views at the end of the trail are well worth the effort: stunning waterfalls, some nearing 100 feet in height, cascade down gorges and feed great rivers, which in turn feed the fertile fields that feed the state.

Guanajuato

Most Americans take trips to Mexico in pursuit of beautiful beaches and wild nightlife, but this region offers more than that. A Guanajuato vacation may be lacking in sand and waves, but it certainly makes up for it with its stunning mountain landscapes and incredible culture. The region played a central role in the Mexican War of Independence, and its history is amazingly colorful and still tangible today. You can tour colonial silver mines that gave Guanajuato its wealth, follow in the footsteps of Hidalgo’s army through the Sierra Madre mountains and even visit the famous Mummy Museum at the capital.

You’ll have plenty of choices of places to stay on your Guanajuato vacation. If you come for the amazing natural scenery, a ranch in the peaceful countryside might be the best option for you. Visitors wanting a more cosmopolitan experience can stay in colorful cities like León or the capital itself. Guanajuato is the region’s cultural center; this stunning colonial city which has become world-famous for its El Cervantino festival that takes place each year is brimming with fantastic cultural and historical attractions. The visually stunning city of San Miguel de Allende is the perfect blend of historic charm and modern vibrancy.

This region has served as the location to so many crucial events in Mexican history, and you are guaranteed to bump into at least a few important historic sites on your Guanajuato vacation. If you’re a true history buff, you can travel along the Bicentennial Route and retrace the path Miguel Hidalgo’s army took during the Mexican war of Independence.

Visitors less interested in history might want to follow the Penajmo Tequila Circuit instead. This tour will take you through stunning landscapes to see one of the biggest Tequila factories in Mexico and the Coyote Ranch blue agave plantation, all the while sampling smooth tequila shots and refreshing margaritas.

This historic capital is a vibrant cultural center with dozens of amazing things to discover. Founded in the mid-16thcentury, the city of Guanajuato burst to life with the discovery of silver at the nearby mine of La Valenciana. The ornate and visually stunning Templo de San Cayetano which overlooks the city is a testament to the wealth and riches that resulted from the mine. Guanajuato’s colonial center has a distinctly European atmosphere, with its cobblestone streets, baroque churches and beautiful plazas lined with dozens of cafes, restaurants and bars. It is also a city particularly suited for romance; the mariachi bands that roam the streets provide the perfect background music as you sip a glass of regional wine under the stars.

If you can swing it, try and visit during the world-famous El Cervantino, the local festival which celebrates Miguel de Cervantes each year. The author’s works are presented in the form of different theatrical, operatic, musical and dance performances throughout the city. Even if you don’t visit during the festival, be sure to stop by the Don Quixote museum dedicated to Cervantes’s most famous character.

Guerrero

A Guerrero vacation is the ideal trip for vacationers looking for adventure, relaxation, or a mixture of both. You’ll never have another vacation where you can explore the centuries-old ruins in the heart of the jungle, relax on beaches that have hosted scores of Hollywood’s most famous stars, then spend the hours until the sun comes come in one of the hottest nightlife spots on the planet. Guerrero has something to offer anyone. Its beautiful natural scenery alone is one reason to visit, and its gorgeous resorts in areas like world-renowned Acapulco Bay make for the ultimate luxury vacation at a price you will enjoy.

The region’s amazingly varied landscape means you’ll have an incredible variety of beautiful places to stay on your Guerrero vacation. The famous “Triangle of the Sun” is by far the most popular destination for visitors. The stunning beaches of Acapulco, Zihuatanejo, and Taxco have been beloved by vacationers for decades, and the glitz and glamour of the luxurious resorts offer a pleasing contrast to the area’s natural beauty. You can experience the glitz and glamour for yourself by exploring the chic shops and restaurants that line the boardwalk and main square.

Acapulco also has the well-earned reputation of being one of the hottest nightlife spots in the entire worlds, and you will not be disappointed by the seemingly endless number of bars, lounges and clubs where you can party away the hours until dawn.

If you’re looking for a little more adventure on your Guerrero vacation, the state’s numerous archaeological sites are the perfect place to explore the scenery and learn more about the fascinating local history. You can walk amongst ancient buildings and admire the amazing clay figurines of Xochipala, remnants of the Mexcala culture. The rock carvings in the mountains of Palma Sola are hauntingly beautiful, and offer a spectacular view of the Acapulco skyline. The remains of the Olmec city Teopantecuanitlan near the rainforest is another amazing archaeological site that is definitely worth a visit.

There’s no shortage of adrenaline-inducing activities to take advantage of in Guerrero either. Jalisco

Situated ideally in between mountains and ocean on the Pacific Coast of Mexico, Jalisco’s just waiting to be explored. With miles of beach, a bustling city scene, exciting nightlife, tons of cultural history and a growing ecotourism industry, this region is home to a perfect mix of laid back Mexican living and rural serenity. Whether you’re here to enjoy the sounds of the city alongside a mariachi soundtrack or lay out for hours on scenic beaches, there’s just something that’ll keep you wanting coming back for more.

Make the most of Jalisco’s diverse ecosystems by trailing up to the mountains, hiking through the forests, relaxing at the beach or taking in the beauty of the arid plains. Zip up to the Mountain region and hike to the top of Sierra del Tigre, and then parasail back down. Stay up in San Sebastian del Oeste, a small rural mountain town that boasts views of the stars unlike anywhere else. You’ll also enjoy a scenic view of the Banderas Bay and Maria Islands in the way up here.

Of course you won’t want to miss spending hours on the gorgeous beaches of Puerto Vallarta. Jalisco is also teeming with cultural history. With grand colonial churches dotting many of its towns, a day trip is definitely in order. Sit outside the basilica of Our Lady of Zapopan and take in the local sights or visit the tall spires of San Juan de los Lagos. Or you’re short on time; explore the cathedrals and plazas that dot the tree-lined streets of Guadalajara.

Mexican Caribbean Coast

The beautiful Mexican Caribbean Coast, located on the country’s Yucatan Peninsula, comprises of the vacation hotspots of Xcaret, Playa del Carmen, Cancun, and Cozumel. The tropical area is divided into three scenic parts: the 80-mile Riviera Maya coastline, the quieter southern coast of Costa Maya, and Cozumel, an island just off of the coast. The Mexican Caribbean Coast is famous for its spectacular beaches, snorkeling and diving, carefree vacation resorts, and dramatic Maya ruins. Choose a popular hotspot, or have a restful getaway at one of the Mexican Caribbean Coast’s peaceful, lesser known vacation spots for your trip.

The Mexican Caribbean Coast is an outdoor lover’s paradise with its dreamy beaches, exciting nature parks, and rich history. Head to Cozumel for one of the largest coral reefs, and one of the world’s top diving locations. An archaeological theme park in itself, Maya ruins abound in this area. Visit some of the top spots like the Maya r city of Tulum, dramatically set right on the coast. You can opt for a driving tour, go for a guided walking tour, or explore these siteson your own. Visit Xel-Ha park for a thrilling theme park centered around Maya ruins that is fun for all ages. Another can’t-miss site is Coba Maya Village and its giant Maya pyramid, in Playa del Carmen. Head inland to explore the jungle and perhaps literally stumble across undiscovered Maya ruins!

Top spots for party lovers and people watchers are Playa del Carmen, with its lively downtown, and Cancun, which is full of clubs and party beaches, but also has a wealth of Maya historic sites. The best bets for a quieter, more restful vacation are Mahaual, or Xcalak on the Costa Maya.

Nayarit

Come discover the splendid beauty of Mexico’s Pacific coast in Nayarit. With a coastline that stretches almost 200 miles, this little region is nestled between the Western Sierra Madre Mountains, which serve as the gorgeous background to everything you do. Home to plentiful of rainforests, exquisite golden beaches, and leafy palms, you’ll feel like you’re living in a postcard when you’re down here.

When you’re ready to leave the beach, get lost in time down the winding tree-lined avenues of Acoponeta, a quaint colonial town.

With more sunny days than you can count, there’s never a wrong time to visit Nayarit. There’s always something unique to do depending on the time of year you visit. For example, if you’re coming down in the winter, be sure to take a trip up to Banderas Bay, where you can catch magnificent humpback whales arrive. But don’t worry if you miss this, there’s load of other activities for you to take part in.

Dive right into a tried and tested local hobby by going on a fishing adventure. Or if you’re looking for an activity that’s a bit calmer, challenge yourself at one of Nayarit’s well landscaped golf courses. Situated atop serene hills and with breathtaking ocean views, these golf courses rank among some of the best and most beautiful in the world.

Spend the day walking the marinas in Nuevo Vallarta or Paradise Village and hop aboard for a quick ride along the coast.
