City A - Z
Tallinn, the capital city of Estonia is without a doubt one of the quaintest cities you are every likely to see. Whilst staying in Tallinn you will very quickly feel that this is unlike any other capital city in the world.
It has a sort of tranquillity about it, perhaps because of the very ‘medieval’ feel of the whole area. Pepper potted with medieval houses and alleyways and city walls straight out of the history books, this is without a doubt one of the most gorgeous cities you are ever likely to visit. Let’s take a little look at the things you can do in Tallinn, and perhaps more importantly, why you should visit.
First things first, the majority of people head to Tallinn in order to experience the ancient architecture, and photographs of this fine city are probably going to have a swaying effect on you too! Perhaps one of the most gorgeous sights within the city is the wall which lies around the town, a defence mechanism which still stands in ruins, but you really can’t help but transport yourself back to a time when that wall was a lifeline for the residents of the area. Heading away from here you have a huge array of alleyways to explore, each of them holding their own unique secret. If you want to get away from the historical architecture, there are a number of green spaces for you to walk around too. Like I said, Tallinn really does not have that ‘big city’ feel about it in any respect.
Outside the old town you have museums and zoos to explore galore. Sure, it may not sound exciting, but trust me, the history of Estonia is incredibly rich and you will love learning about it. I certainly recommend a visit to the Tallinn Zoo in any case, it is a fun day out for all of the family. If you wish to stick around the old town then don’t forget to have a gaze at the ex-KGB building, it played a vital part in the cold war and certainly the Kadriorg Palace, a lovely little building with a lot of history behind it.
For those that still wish to ‘feel’ a great city, then thankfully it isn’t all about the history here. There is also a larger newly built down which has a very concrete feel to it, not that it is bad at all. Head here for a huge array of restaurants to sample delightful Estonian dishes, and of course a few shopping opportunities.
Finally, if you want a bit of a lazy day then you can head to one of the many beaches surrounding the area, sure, the sun may not be blazing every day of the year, but it is nice to take the weight off your feet, after all, the majority of the time you are going to be walking around Tallinn!
If you are looking for somewhere slightly different to head on holiday, why not head to Tallinn? Sure, you won’t be getting the blistering heat of Spain, but trust me, this city is a little undiscovered gem and you will absolutely love it.
