There is much more to Glasgow than first meets the eye.

A visit to Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, a walk around George Square and the Medieval architecture of the City’s cathedral are just a few of the attractions to a city that often doesn’t get the credit it deserves.

But what the people of Scotland’s second-city love more than anything else is football.

Glasgow has two giants of the British and world game, Glasgow Rangers and Glasgow Celtic. When these two footballing superpowers clash, the entire city and the rest of Scotland comes to a standstill.

‘Old Firm’ derby match

Celtic’s legendary striker, Henrik Larsson once said about the rivalry: “Nothing compares to Celtic playing Rangers — absolutely nothing. ‘You can talk about Barca against their old rivals from Madrid, but, believe me, it’s not even close. I’ve played in two of those matches, so I know what I am talking about. There is nothing bigger than the Glasgow derby.”

The Celtic Football Club

aka The Bhoys, The Celts, The Hoops

Celtic are the current dominant force out of these two powerhouses. They have won the last seven league titles in Scotland, bringing their total to 49 championships.  During this run, they have also picked up multiple Scottish cup and league cup wins along the way. Since being formed in 1887, and playing their first match in 1888, Celtic have finished in the top three in the Scottish league table 97 times and experienced continental success when their famed ‘Lisbon Lions’ side secured the 1967 European Cup.

Celtic Park

Celtic’s iconic stadium, Celtic Park, is located in the Parkhead area of Glasgow. It has witnessed some of the greatest games British Football has had to offer and the crowd that attends the 60,000 seater-stadium is often the ‘12th man’ that gives the Hoops the edge over their opponents. The atmosphere served up in this footballing hot-bed is among the best a footballer can play in.

Rangers Football Club

aka The Gers, The Light Blues, The Teddy Bears

Across Glasgow, Rangers are the other giant club in this city. With Celtic, they compete in the ‘Old Firm’ derby match. This rivalry is one of the oldest and fiercest in world football and has been contested 413 times since the first meeting in 1890.  Rangers lead the way here with 159 wins but, with Celtic on 155 wins and 99 draws between the two, there is little to choose between them.

Rangers hold the world record for football league titles won, ammassing 54 titles since they were formed in 1872. Along with this, they also have 33 Scottish Cups, 27 Scottish League Cups and a European Cup Winners Cup win in 1972, making them the most successful club in British football in terms of trophies won.

Ibrox Stadium

Rangers’ stadium, Ibrox, is one of the most recognisable football stadiums in the world.  Located on the south of the River Clyde, the original ‘criss-cross’ design, from architect Archibald Leitch, still remains on the three-tiered main stand and is one of the last remaining football grounds to have this feature. This 50,000 seater stadium is a must see for any football fan or classic sports stadium enthusiast.
