Travel to Göreme
Located in the Cappadocia region of Turkey, Goreme is an outdoor paradise. Although the town itself is quite small, this world heritage site is the gateway to Goreme National Park.
First settled as early as the 19th century BC, this is a land of spectacular landscapes that have been sculpted by erosion alone. Within the sanctuaries that have been carved into the rocks, you can find evidence of art from the Byzantine period. Dwellings, villages, and even entire underground towns can still be found within the borders of the park.
Cultural features are part of the park as well. Some of the pillars stand over 30m tall. From the town of Goreme, you’ll need to make your way toward the Devrent Valley, which is a trip of about 10 minutes.
As you arrive, you’ll notice the various rock formations tend to look like animals. Many of noted how there are snakes, camels, and dragons that can be seen in the rocks. The erosion process also created numerous fairy chimneys and rock pillars, creating an impressive landscape that is rare to find anywhere else in the world.
While in Goreme, take some time to visit the local open-air museum. Founded by a group of 20 monks, you’ll find notable churches, local artifacts, and magnificent artwork throughout the grounds. Some of the structures in the monastery date to the 12th century.
