Grožnjan is a medieval town whose original beauty has been kept, known nowadays as Town of Artists, an artist colony, where painters, sculptors and musicians comes to live and work.
In Grožnjan are found ancient Roman artifacts and near Grožnjan is the remains of a Roman house, but the first mention of Grožnjan dates from 1102, when Margrave of Istria Ulric II and his wife Adelaida granted their land to Patriarch of Aquileia. In this document the fort is called Castrum Grisiniana.
Grožnjan became the town of artists in 1956. That is when they started to populate empty houses which the residents were forced to abandon and thus made sure the town did not perish. Today their performances and ideas make this town one of the most favourable destinations for an educational, relaxing and creative holiday.
