Hanmer Springs is New Zealand’s ultimate alpine spa destination with beautiful naturally heated pools and indulgent spa treatments. Or you can sign up for a heart stopping outdoor adventure such as bungy jumping, skydiving, jet boating and rafting. There’s also great fishing, golf, hiking, horse riding and, in winter, skiing.

A visit to Hanmer Springs can be as relaxing or action packed as you choose. The hardest thing will be trying to choose what to do. For a holiday built around the great outdoors, this little alpine town has a lot on offer. Adrenalin addicts will find plenty to get the heart pumping from jet boating the Waiau Gorge, bungy jumping off the 35m high Waiau Ferry Bridge, white-water rafting down the Waiau River or quad biking in the mountains.

For those who enjoy something a little more leisurely, there’s horse riding through the countryside, easy forest walks, fishing in pristine rivers or an afternoon’s shopping in the village. Hanmer Springs has a range of trails for easy day walks to explore the beautiful Heritage Forest. There are also mountain biking trails for the novice rider and for the more experienced. You can also enjoy scenic helicopter flights to take in the area’s dramatic scenery. If you have a car you can explore the area’s wildly beautiful countryside and visit award-winning boutique wineries.

When you’ve had enough action, you can relax in the Hanmer thermal reserves where you can soak in thermal mineral, sulphur and freshwater pools and the kids can have fun on water slides.

There’s plenty of family friendly activities including a visit to the Wairaki Farm Park to hand feed farm animals, a round of mini golf, a four-wheel drive tour, or a horse trek.

In winter, skiers and snowboarders can carve up the Hanmer Springs mountains or nearby Mt Lyford.
