Travel to Izamal

With 15,000 years of history, Izamal is often called the Yellow City because of the color of most of its buildings. Some also call it the City of Hills, though the hills are actually the remains of old temple pyramids.

Many Mexican cities offer an experience that is akin to a pilgrimage, thanks to their location near ancient sites or beautiful beaches. Izamal offers more of the traditional pilgrimage, as several statues of the saints in the city are said to be able to perform miracles. Our Lady of Izamal is the most popular.

Izamal is also unique in the fact that it is one of the few locations in the world today where the Maya language is regularly spoken. You’ll hear it just as often as you’ll hear Spanish. Most of the signs in the city are even in the Maya language.

Outside of the spiritual and historic wonders offered by the city, you’ll want to spend some time enjoying the main arcade of the convent in the city. The grounds are quite large, and the experience of exploring is very peaceful. The streets of the city are also very calm, giving you an opportunity to find small shops and cafés that offer wonderful delights.

In total, there are more than 160 structures deemed to be archaeologically important within Izamal. The most famous, the great pyramid to Kinich Kak Moo, can be seen from many locations within the city. At the top of a base covering two acres in size stands a pyramid of 10 levels.

Adventure awaits you. It’s time to plan the journey.
