If you are feeling fit, spend a day hiking Mt. Washington, an inactive volcano that erupted within the last 3000 years. Take a boat to the western end of the island and tackle the 822m tall mountain.
The Great Astrolabe Reef is one of the largest reefs in the world and remains relatively unspoilt. It is a breeding ground for large bill fish such as marlin. Ono Island, located just off Kadavu, gives great access to the reef. With perfect water temperatures year round and up to 40m visibility on a windless day, The Great Astrolabe Reef is a special place to visit.
If you haven’t surfed before, Kadavu is the place to learn. It has uncrowded surfing breaks that attract pros from around the world. Book yourself a lesson and become a surfing master in no time.
For something a little less active book yourself a multi-day kayak tour. You can choose where to go or let your guide take you to their favourite spots. While out kayaking you have the chance to do some dolphin or whale watching. The island is a known viewing spot for these amazing creatures.
Keen fisherman are provided for on Kavadu. Experienced guides will take you to their favourite fishing locations. Be patient and you could fight a huge marlin or reel in the rare mahi-mahi.
One of the best things to do on the island and one that will leave you with the best memories, is to participate in a local kava ceremony. Present a gift of kava to the local village chief and join the ceremony. Drink with the villagers and experience the relaxing effects – although you may wonder why your tongue is going numb. After the ceremony join a ‘meke’, a night of dancing and singing which is unique to each village. Finish the night feasting on food cooked underground in a traditional lovo – an oven built into the ground.
