What to see and do in Kaikoura ?

There is a huge range of activities for every traveller visiting Kaikoura. Whether you prefer a more active lifestyle of hiking and exploring your surrounds or observing and discovering the local marine life is your idea of a holiday than Kaikoura is the ultimate New Zealand destination for your next break.

Kaikoura experiences moderate temperatures all year round, it does not usually reach above 30C even in the summer months of December through to February, making it the perfect place to visit at any time of the year.

There are a great variety of must see attractions. The most popular activity is located in Kaikoura’s beautiful surrounding ocean and is perfect for visitors of all ages to participate in. Whale watching by boat or air is a must when in Kaikoura and is available at any time of the year. It is the sperm whale that is located here and it is a once in a lifetime opportunity to watch these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat.

Another great marine encounter in Kaikoura is the quick-witted local dolphins, you can meet them on one of the many tours available, they can usually be booked either in the village information centre, your local accommodation or directly with the respective company in person or online. A must do activity is a guided sea kayaking tour where you have the opportunity to get up close and personal with most of Kaikoura’s stunning sea life.

The New Zealand fur seals are a popular attraction in Kaikoura, catch the playful sea creatures in the morning at low tide. There a great variety of walking tracks in and around the village, explore the Mt. Fyffe track that leads you up the steep mountain and gives you fantastic panoramic views of the Kaikoura peninsula. For something different visit the old Fyffe House, it is a historical building built by one of Kaikoura’s first fisherman and the foundations are built from whale vertebrae.

Another active option is to take the Kaikoura peninsula trek, it is about a three hour round trip but the views are breath-taking and you get the opportunity to spot many of the birds that are unique to New Zealand a long the way. You can also take a bird watching tour to see some of New Zealand’s native wildlife.
