Travel to Karangasem

The Karangasem region of northeast Bali is a popular tourism area, known for its stunning tropical landscape, world-class diving and laidback pace of life. It’s also home to an active volcano, Mt Agung, considered the holiest site in all of Bali and it’s the highest point on the island. There are several popular tourist areas to visit on your Karangasem holiday, including the tiny fishing village of Amed, popular with snorkelers and scuba divers; Candidasa, a quiet village by the sea; and Padangbai, a port area where ferries make the crossing to nearby Lombok island and a point of departure for scuba diving excursions.

Most of the tourist accommodation in Karangasem is around the coastal villages and towns that run from the north right down the coast. They include the scuba diving haven of Tulamben, where you can base yourself for a diving holiday, and the isolated village of Amed, possibly one of the quietest holiday spots anywhere, but then that’s its charm. Other popular places to stay in Karangasem include the holiday town of Candidasa, which is picturesque and right on the sea, and Padangbai, which has less accommodation but is good for short stays if going out diving or taking the ferry to Lombok.

Best of Karangasem

What to see and do in Karangasem ?

Soaring to over 3,000 meters into the sky, the majestic Mt Agung dominates not just the Karangasem skyline but the entire island. This locally revered volcanic mountain last erupted in 1964 and occasionally wisps of smoke can be seen trailing from it.

On the slopes of Mt Agung is Bali’s most important of the many temples peppering the island, Besakih. Tourists can visit the temple, which is mostly thronged with visiting Balinese, who have ancestral graves there that they tend to. On a clear day the view from Besakih will suck the breath out of you in an instant: the vast panorama of Bali and the Indian Ocean stretching out far below will indeed leave you lightheaded with the glorious splendour of this most spectacularly beautiful part of the world.

Trips to the top of Mt Agung can be organised with local guides, departing in the very early hours of the morning to scale the steep slopes and reach the summit in time for the first divine rays that will meld into a collective dazzling celestial fireball that will give you a morning like no other and make you understand why Bali is called the Morning of the World.

Tulamben is a mecca for scuba divers and possibly the most popular place on the island to explore beneath the waves. Its popularity is not limited to the vast array of sea life, but also the rusting hulk just offshore of the USS Liberty, sunk by a Japanese torpedo in 1942.

Amed is about as remote as you’ll get in Bali but it’s worth a trip to this tiny fishing village that has become popular with tourists wanting to get away from it all. Take a boat trip out to sea or just lie on the beach and have one of those famous Balinese massages that will caresses all of your troubles away.
