Founded in 1680, Karlskrona is often called “Sweden’s only Baroque city.” It is the home of the only military naval base for the country and serves as the headquarters for the local coast guard. The city itself encompasses more than 30 islands along the Blekinge archipelago. Karlskrona gives even St. Petersburg a run for the money. The entire city has been designated a historical site and is rife with the naval history of Sweden. Attractions include naval museums, submarines and a variety of ships from differing eras.

While naval history dominates Karlskrona, the city has much more to offer in atmosphere. The older sections of the city have a heavy baroque style whether for architecture, streets or epic park areas. Since its founding, the city has kept its street structure intact. That allows the winds to blow directly in from the sea to the city center. Around the naval port, some of the city has even been declared a world heritage site.

From the churches and religious structures to the old military installations, it is easy to see why there has been such an extensive effort to retain the Baroque influences of the city. You feel like a time traveler, wandering lost streets, as you see the various tours, sculptures, and pillars that influence this style.

In the summer, there is a festival in the city called “The Sail,” though it is being called Skargardsfest these days.  The festival is fairly straight-forward. Find something good to eat, grab a favorite beverage, then watch as the sailboats line up at the pier to put on a parade. Each visiting ship gets to hear its national anthem being played. Be sure to visit the Bastion Aurora, the Kungsholmen Fort, and the circular harbor during your time in Karlskrona as well.

Then don’t forget about the sea. Walking along the archipelago on a sunny day is one of the most relaxing experiences in the world. Life is laid back here in Karlskrona. Time has a different definition to it. That makes it the perfect holiday destination.
