Travel to Karlštejn
Founded in the 14th century, the predominant feature of Karlstejn, a small market town about 30 kilometers from Prague, is the impressive castle which shares a name with the community.
Karlstejn Castle is one of the most visited castles in the Czech Republic. There are three different terraces built into the complex, with each one having a different level of importance. The lowest terrace was reserved as the Imperial Palace. Above it was the Marian Tower, which was followed by the Big Tower.
Inside the complex you will find the Chapel of the Holy Cross. The chapel was designed to provide absolute safety for the world’s most precious items or documents at the time. For nearly a century, even the Imperial Crown of the Holy Roman Emperor was held there. The security consists of four doors, each independently guarded, with 19 locks to each key.
There is no other ancient security protocol in the world today that is as extensive as the one found at the Karlstejn Castle.
The community is quite small and is situated in the valley below the castle. Many of the businesses in the community are designed to provide tourism support for those coming to see the castle. You’ll find a small clock museum, a museum of nativity scenes, and a wax museum in town as well.
