Travel to Koh Lipe
Koh Lipe is a small island with three main beaches all within 15 minutes walking distance. This tiny island is officially part of the Tarutao National Marine Park. Find this island in the southern part of the Andaman Sea, near the border of Thailand and Malaysia. On Koh Lipe there’s no need to plan an itinerary, or worry about traffic and travel time. People visit Koh Lipe for relaxing on the powdery white sand, and swimming, snorkelling and diving the green-blue waters. Pattaya Beach attracts a great number of international tourists – so here you’ll find dance bars and luxury commercial resorts.
Koh Lipe accommodation ranges from luxury resorts to family-run bungalows. Pattaya beach boasts the most choice when it comes to accommodation, restaurants and bars. Here you’ll find your larger luxury resorts as well as more budget-friendly options. Stay on Sunrise Beach to be close to the locals of Chao Ley village or for the ease of snorkelling right off the beach. Choose from family-run beach bungalows and a few commercial resorts. The quietest beach of the island is Sunset Beach. Here you’ll gain the vibe of ‘Old Lipe’, with very few places to stay, ranging from basic huts on the beach to bungalows in the jungle.

What to see and do in Koh Lipe ?
The most popular past time of Koh Lipe is relaxation. Stroll on the powdery white sands of Sunrise Beach and Sunset Beach. Take a boat trip to snorkel and dive the surrounding waters or visit a neighbouring island. Mingle with fellow travellers on Pattaya Beach at one of their many lively bars.
Visit Pattaya Beach, Koh Lipe’s main beach, for the most choice when it comes to restaurants and bars. Pattaya Beach is a large sheltered cove featuring Koh Lipe’s characteristic super fine sand. There’s snorkelling right of the beach but you’ll have to stick to the eastern end of Pattaya to avoid the many boats. For the best snorkelling right off the beach, head to Sunrise Beach. Here you’ll also find where the locals live, with a school and hospital. The small local village of Chao Ley is a settlement of sea gypsies. Sunset Beach is the quietest of Koh Lipe’s beaches, making it the perfect destination for romantic one-on-ones. Find it on the west side of Koh Lipe for stunning sunsets and private accommodation.
Walking Street area, close to Pattaya Beach and Sunrise Beach is where you’ll find more great dining options. You’ll find the local favourite bar, ‘Oh My God!’ making the best cocktails on the island.
For snorkelling offshore head to two islands off Sunrise Beach. There’s Koh Kra, with the best snorkelling to the right of the island, and Koh Usen, with the best coral to the left of the island.
On Koh Lipe there are seven dive shops to choose from. Determine your preference by visiting them all; they’re only separated by a short walk. Koh Chabang is probably the most picturesque site for both diving and snorkelling around Koh Lipe. You’ll find a soft coral covered pinnacle, to about 16 metres. The Koh Sawang dive spot offers great visibility and a good chance of seeing marine life, migrating from deep nearby waters. Dive to the backdrop of a huge black rock covered with soft coral, to explore coral heads and a shallow reef. Experienced divers can relish in the Kong Hua wreck dive, with average depths of around 40 metres.
There are 51 islands that share the waters of the southern Andaman Sea. Take a tour to four or five islands for a snorkel trip. Otherwise, visit uninhabited islands for unspoiled nature, with a short trip in a long tail boat. Two of the larger islands, Koh Adang and Koh Rawi, offer opportunities for camping.
When in Thailand you must take advantage of family-run restaurants serving authentic Thai cuisine, and there’s plenty to choose from. As an island, Koh Lipe favours seafood and you’ll find a seafood barbeque offered every night of the week at many places.
