Travel to Koh Samet
Koh Samet is a popular island destination, with a close proximity to the city of Bangkok. Located just 220km from the capital, it’s a favourite break from city life for Bangkokians themselves. Koh Samet provides truly laid back living. This small T-shaped island has no real commercial tourist attractions and a limited road network. With the quiet atmosphere and time on your hands a relaxing getaway is yours for the taking. Boasting the best beaches of Thailand, Koh Samet is also the driest of Thailand’s island in the wet season; making it a destination to visit all year round.
Most of Koh Samet’s hotels are located on the north and east of the island. To be close to water activities, restaurants and bars, stay at the most popular beach, Hat Sae Kaew. Stay close to Hat Sae Kaew Beach at Ao Phai Beach, where you’ll find more affordable accommodation. For privacy and seclusion stay at one of the handful of hotels located on Ao Prao Beach, on the west coast. Budget hotel rooms, bungalows and camping are among the most affordable of Koh Samet accommodation. Mid-range hotel rooms offer additional comforts, like air-conditioning. You’ll also find luxury hotel rooms and resort suites, offering spa facilities and more.

What to see and do in Koh Samet ?
Koh Samet, located in the Gulf of Thailand, is a destination for relaxation and exploring. Powdery white sand and crystal-clear blue waters provide the perfect context for whiling away the hours. Appreciate a unique experience of the island and its surrounds by taking a boat trip with a local boat owner.
Koh Samet and its surroundings were declared a National Park by the Thai government in 1981. This means visiting the island requires an entry fee. Get to Baan Phe Pier by bus, rather than a speeding minivan, from Bangkok’s Eastern Bus Terminal, Suvarnabhumi Airport, or ‘backpacker street’, Khao San Road. Then take a ferry or boat to the island.
Koh Samet’s beaches are stunning, and not just for swimming; the coastline reveals varied and beautiful sites. Hat Sai Kawe Beach, otherwise known as Diamond Beach is the most popular. It’s the longest beach on Koh Samet at 780 metres long. You’ll find lots of activity here with dining, bar hopping and water sports. Be over water with windsurfing, jet-skiing or a ride in a banana boat.
Ao Prao Beach, also known as Paradise Beach, is the only beach on the west coast. With only a small number of places to stay, it usually sees small numbers. Perfect for romantic strolls at sunset, for memories that will stay with you a very long time. At Ao Prao you’ll also find the island’s health centre. The areas underdevelopment provides the space and time for some self-time. Health courses and health promoting activities are offered in yoga, painting, dance and meditation.
Between the beaches of Hat Sai Kaew and Ao Phai you’ll see rock outcrops. Also at this spot, you’ll see the Mermaid and Pra Aphai Mani statues. The statues tell the story of Phra Aphai Mani, a mermaid who saves Prince Aphai Mani from the sea and takes him to Koh Samet.
Visit Ao Noi Na Beach and the local temple to see how the locals live. Ao Noi Na is where the locals keep their fishing boats moored.
After spending some time beach bound, approach a local boat owner to take you on a tour of nearby islands. Explore the islands of Plai Tin, Kruai, Kham and Kudi, on the east side of the island. You can also hire a motorboat with a driver, to explore the circumference of the island and stop for snorkelling.
