You’ll find Kortrijk in West Flanders, centrally located between Ghent, Lille, and Mouscron. Situated on the Leie, it was originally founded as a Gallo-Roman town that was called “Cortoriacum.” Two Roman roads converged here at the river.

Thanks to flax and wool, Kortrijk was a major trading and economic force throughout the Middle Ages. It was one of the richest and largest cities in the region. Its influence continues to this day, with textiles and flax central to the continued development of the economy.

The Korte Steenstraat in Kortrijk was the first pedestrian shopping street in Belgium. Journey along the street down to the Theater Square to enjoy the picturesque old city center. The Medieval architecture in the city is remarkably preserved and restored, lending the belfry and beguinage being named as world heritage sites.

Be sure to visit the city hall, next to the Grote Market, to enjoy the statues of the Counts of Flanders and the late Gothic façade. You might also enjoy a stop at the Baggaertshof, which contains a botanical garden to explore.

The Saint-Martin Church was originally built in the 13th century, but was rebuilt two centuries later after a fire. With its 83m tower, you’ll be able to get one of the best views of the city. Remeber to see the Menin Gate, established in 1927; a memorial for the British soldiers who lost their lives in World War I.

You could also visit the Church of Our Lady, which is where the golden spurs that were taken from a 14th century battlefield were hung. Outside the Church of Our Lady, the ruins of the original castle that once enclosed the church still remain and the church is the oldest building in the city of Kortrijk. Further, a highlight found in the Church of Our Lady is that site seers can view paintings of all the former rulers of Flanders.

Stedelijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten

The Municipal Museum of Fine Arts in Kortrijk, also known as the Stedelijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten, is home to one of the finest art galleries in Belgium.
