Found in the Paphos District of Cyprus, the village of Kouklia is about 40km west of Limassol. It is built on the site of the ancient city of Palepaphos and the modern core of the village was built around the archaeological findings in the region. Numerous ruins, including the temple of Paphian Aphrodite, have been found during local excavation efforts.
One of the best ways to experience Kouklia is to find some high ground that overlooks the village. This allows you to see the extensive ruins for yourself, some of which are more than 5,000 years old. Be sure to visit the Kouklia Archaeological Museum during your stay to see artifacts recovered from the region that go from the original founding of the village to the Ottoman Empire.
You’ll find a sarcophagus on display, a beautiful mosaic, and a 12th century stone church are some of the highlights of the tour. Each year, the Festival of Aphrodite-Paphia is a fun way to get to know the village a little better. The celebration is usually held at the beginning of August. Celebrations and festivals are held in September as well to commemorate the cultural legacy of the village.
Aphrodite Hills offers a lovely tourist resort that offers two golf courses, tennis courts, horseback riding, and spas to enjoy. Book your accommodations here and you’ll have easy restaurant and café access to your adventures as well. Kouklia has coastal access, though the beaches are quite rustic and rocky.
