Kununurra is a city no only for a rendezvous with nature but also for inspiration and motivation when everything else seems to go another way.
Literally meaning Meeting of the Big Waters, Kununurra is a relatively new town in Australia. Contrary to most places which grew from small communities that gradually evolved into towns and cities and on the process developed a rich backdrop of culture and tradition, the city traces its history only a few decades back to the creation of the Great Ord River Irrigation.
The town was created, in the truest sense of the word, with the purpose of being the service town for laborers and farmers that were implanted to the area during the construction of the dam and the irrigation system.
Sitting on arid lands, Australian government did not just resign to the fact that agriculture would not be feasible in the Western region. They then determined to challenge the adversities offered by nature. Aside from the dam, they also factually created two man-made lakes to ensure that farmlands they aim to develop would never go dry.
True enough, what used to be hot and warm landscape of barren lands, Kununurra now features croplands and greeneries as far as the eyes could see.

Best of Kununurra
What to see and do in Kununurra ?
The outback town of Kununurra in the east of the Kimberley region of Western Australia is near the border of the Northern Territory. It has recently been known as a location for the epic film Australia starting Nicole Kidman. She famously remarked that the waterfalls in the area have fertile properties as seven people working on the film had babies after swimming in the water, including herself, and she had trouble conceiving. The best time to visit Kununurra is from May to September, during the dry season, as it can be extremely rainy during the wet season and some roads and parks may be closed.
Kununurra is a rugged and dramatic place that has raw beauty and stunning scenery in equal measure. It’s a place where you step back in time to Australia’s outback past while also exploring some of the best of modern life that the country has to offer. It makes for an unforgettable holiday experience.
Despite being somewhat remote, Kununurra has lots to offer visitors. A climb up Kelly’s Knob gives an expansive overview of the entire area. You can drive near to the top but will have to get out and walk the rest of the way, which is quite rocky. The spectacular views are worth the effort, and for added enjoyment, take a picnic.
Another inspiring walk is through the City of Ruins, or Lost City, where you won’t see a city at all but sandstone formations that collectively resembles one; it’s a tremendous sight and should not be missed.
Also not to be missed is one thing the region is famous for: diamonds. Visit Kimberley Fine Diamonds in Kununurra and see if you can get your hands on a rare pink diamond found in the area. These sparkling gems are mined in the nearby Argyle diamond mine. It’s one of the biggest suppliers of diamonds in the world.
You’ll need to look out for crocodiles if you’re heading to the popular Ivanhoe Crossing leisure area. It’s a concrete causeway over the Ord River and is popular with picnickers and for fishing, where barramundi is a common catch. Swimming, not surprisingly, is not recommended.
An interesting side trip is to Celebrity Tree Park, where all manner of notables – from British royalty to local entertainers – have planted a sapling. Each one has a plaque to commemorate the event. Many of the luminaries had been in the area to witness the Ord Irrigation Scheme that enabled greater agriculture in the arid area. The park is only a short walk from the centre of Kununurra.
During the dry season you can enjoy a night out at an open-air movie theatre called Picture Gardens. You can drive or walk in and sit in a deck chair, and see a movie under the stars.
For information about many other things to see and do, the Kununurra Visitor Centre has all you need to know.
