Come to Kyoto to see the real and ancient Japan. Explore Buddhist temples and take part in ‘otsutome’, a morning prayer service with the temple monks. Have a swim with the locals at a ‘sento’, or public bath house, or buy a kimono in the Kiyomizudera shopping area. Finish the day watching the cherry blossoms fall.

The city’s temples are worth a day or more of exploring. Take a guided tour of a temple and listen to the stories surrounding it. With history dating back hundreds of years, you will get a unique perspective on Japanese culture. Many temples offer Zen meditation courses where the meanings behind each meditation are explained and you can learn from a true Zen-master. Take a moment of quiet reflection and marvel at the intricately presented Japanese gardens within the temple grounds.

While in Kyoto feast on delicious Japanese cuisine. Stop one of the city’s many noodle shops and try ramen or fresh sashimi. After lunch head to a tea-room and drink Japanese green-tea. Soak up the atmosphere while sipping your tea and eating traditional Japanese sweets.

Spend the whole day at the local sento and soak away your troubles in an outdoor bath. After the first bath you can jump into a giant herbal pool and enjoy the restorative effect. After swimming spend time in the sauna and sweat out any toxins.

It is possible to spend time with a geisha when in Kyoto. A geisha is a traditional performer and hostess who will serve and entertain you during dinner. Geishas are skilled conversationalists and expert hosts who will explain Japanese culture and their profession.

Take a day to explore the Imperial Palace. The palace was the home of the Japanese Imperial Family until they relocated to Tokyo in 1868. The palace itself is located in the Kyoto Imperial Park, home to another palace and other historic attractions. Check out Itsukushima Shrine which is located on an island in the middle of a pond.

If you plan ahead you can book your Kyoto holiday to coincide with the annual cherry blossom season in early April. The cherries only blossom for a few weeks a year and the city is one of Japan’s best spots to view them.
