What to see and do in Lautoka ?

The picturesque city of Lautoka offers many creature comforts including restaurants serving international cuisine, luxury resorts with their bars and swimming pools and a shopping centre. More importantly, Lautoka gives you prime access to a lot of Fiji’s natural drawcards – jet boat up the Nadi River and visit the Mamanuca Islands for world-class resorts and scuba diving.

Popular attractions in the city’s centre include the Children’s Park, the Botanical Garden, the large Lautoka Market stocked with fresh produce and the small charming shops located along Vitogo Parade, Naviti Street and Yasawa Street.

Yachts and cruise ships hang off the shores of Lautoka, ready to take you on day cruises to the islands of Yasawa and Mamanuca. The Yasawa Islands are less commercialised than the Mamanuca Islands and are popular with back-packers and free-spirited travellers. The unspoiled natural terrain of these islands are perfect for exploring and provide a true break from urban living. The place to visit if you want to learn about Fijian culture and its’ diversity, with villages dotted throughout the islands. Experience the beautiful ambience of the Sawailau Caves. These limestone caves are located in the Blue Lagoon area of the islands. Find this group of islands north of Lautoka.

The Mamanuca Islands are a collection of 20 islands, located near Nadi. There’s an island for everyone from young to old, party-oriented to family-friendly. You’ll find world-class resorts, perfect for island-hopping and meeting resort folk. The popularity of these islands with visitors means you’ll find many tours offering jet skiing safaris, parasailing, windsurfing and dolphin-watching. For adventurous types a visit wouldn’t be complete without a dive at the famous dive spots, Big W and Gotham City.

When exploring the surrounding terrain of Lautoka visit the countryside between Nadi and Lautoka to see the Sabeto Valley. Here you’ll find the famous Sleeping Giant mountain, otherwise known as Mount Batilamu. At the base of the Sleeping Giant you’ll find an adventure park of ziplines for a great way to experience the area. When visiting the Sabeto Valley, don’t miss the Sabeto Hot Springs for a series of geothermal hot pools and a knee-deep silty mud pool.

Another must visit of the region is the Koroyanitu National Heritage Park, located 10km south east of Lautoka. This beautiful park reveals waterfalls, birdlife, native dakua trees and archaeological sites. The park is home to six largely self-sufficient villages that cooperate to preserve Fiji’s last unlogged tropical montane forest. Access to villages by visitors can be tricky. To mingle with the locals, visit the Lautoka Abaca Village, located at the base of Mount Koroyanitu.
