Leuven has a history that dates back to the 9th century, but the two world wars created a massive amount of destruction that has caused the city many dark days.
In World War I, for example, German soldiers killed the university rector and all of the police officers in the city. More than 230,000 books were burned, including over 1,000 that were printed before 1501.
Despite all of the destruction Leuven has seen and its reputation as a university community, there are still some amazing sites to see. The Beguinage tops the list as a UNESCO World Heritage site, made so in 1998. It’s 3 hectares in size and offers over 400 different residences in the historical quarter. Take a moment to stop at the main entrance gate, gaze down the brick pathway, and enjoy the view.
Make sure to enjoy the Oude Markt, the Old Market Square, while in town for a visit. There are a few restaurants, but it is mostly pubs that are on the square. It’s where everyone goes for a beer, or maybe three, and when the sun peaks out the terraces will be packed.
One of the hidden gems of the city is its botanical gardens. What makes these gardens unique is that there are small, hidden spaces that branch off from the main gardens so there is always a quiet place to find. The central pond helps to support the turtles and even a few farm animals have been spotted from time to time. Entrance is free all year long.
