Lvov, or perhaps Lviv if you prefer, is a city in Western Ukraine that proclaims itself as open to the world. Settlements of this city date back as far as the 5^th century and the first records of the modern city can be found in the year 1256.

It has been named as the best Ukranian city in which to live and has even earned the nickname of Ukraine’s “Little Paris.” Romance might not be the mission when you visit this city, but there are several points of interest to enjoy during your visit.

Lvov’s Old Town Is Filled With Landmarks

Having been on the UNESCO World Heritage List for nearly two decades, the Old Town in Lvov is a sight to behold. With over 2,000 historical landmarks within the area, Ukraine even considers over 200 of them to be national landmarks. Amongst the highlights are:

• Lvov High Castle, which is located on top of Castle Hill within the city. It is at the highest point in Lvov, but the castle does currently stand in ruins. Today a television tower stands there, but a journey here will give you a breathtaking view of the city.
• The Church of St. Onuphrius, which is a Basilian monastery and a Greek Catholic Church, contains several artworks from Sosenko and Paslavsky and has been rebuilt over the centuries nearly a dozen different times.
• George’s Cathedral, along with the Metropolitan’s Palace, dates back to 1761 and is a beautiful example of neo-classical design. An old flower garden extends along the western wall of the complex and many journey here because Pope John Paul II stayed at the palace when he visited Ukraine in 2001.

It is possible to spend an entire two week holiday just exploring the various historical sites in the UNESCO Heritage Site. These highlights, however, can get you started on the creation of your own journey through Lvov!

Exploring Market Square Is Always a Wonderful Decision!

Planned in the 14^th century, the idea was to build a central square like you’d see in any traditional European settlement. What happened however, was something a little different. It’s more of a rectangle than a square and two streets come off of each corner. In the center sits the town hall and around the square sits over 40 tenement houses.

You’ll find a number off vendors at the market on any given day, offering local wares, antiques, produce, and pretty much anything else you can think of as you wander about. Be sure to take the time to see the four fountains in the four corners of the square as they represent four of Greece’s mythological figures.

Lvov is a beautifully unique city with a flair all its own, steeped in history, yet modern by any definition. It’s awaiting your visit, so be sure to include it in your plans for the near future!
