Travel to Machu Picchu
Machu Picchu is one of the most famous Incan ruins in the world today. Built in the 15thn century, if not earlier, the defensive structure is at 2430m, guarding the Sacred Valley, in Peru. It is sometimes called the Lost City, though it is believed that Pachacuti had it constructed around 1450. It would later be abandoned about a century later.
In 1983, Machu Picchu was designated a world heritage site.
Although the defensive structure was locally known, it avoided the colonial era in the region completely. It wouldn’t be until 1911 when the site was brought to the world stage. That allowed the sacred rocks of the city to be preserved, making it one of the most unique sites in all of South America.
At its height, Machu Picchu supported up to 1,000 people who lived there permanently. The mountains were terraced to allow for farming at the high altitudes. Livestock was brought into the city and commercial imports happened frequently.
In total, there are about 200 buildings in the complex to explore. Temples are located in the upper portion of the town, while warehouses were set on the lower end. Various staircases allow for exploration and movement along the different levels. A complete residential section exists in the city too. In 2017, more than 1.4 million people visited the site.
Because of its high altitude, certain measures of safety should be taken to avoid altitude sickness and hiking accidents. With the right preparation, however, Macchu Picchu is one of those destinations that everyone should see at least once in their lifetime.
